When the War is Over

Only 2 weeks ago we swam nude to Shelley. It’s meant to be a turning point for a sunrise but it refuses to come up earlier. La Nina quietly wages war.

The rain has cleared. A magic morning. Fresh from the carpark I can see the Bombie breaking, swirls of spray. The swell is much calmer at the south end. A low tide, a longer walk, some chunky waves at the point. It flattens and we swim out. Some cappuccino froth over the bower, nothing like Felicity’s snow adventures at Curly yesterday. Warmer in the water. Although only 8 degrees out. The weather war is over, numbers up considerably today. Franji didn’t report any dustbin shaped stingrays. Maybe 2 foot viz. Salty. Nice walk with some sunshine up the ramp.

All around this chaos and madness. Can’t help feeling nothing more than sadness.

Wild and stormy waters

Wild water and floods yet again of biblical proportions. Just a perspective. 


Todays ocean remain similar to the last few days see below, so if you skipped this mornings swim  like me, you didn’t miss much  … except dolphins it turns out ! 

The description starts with this sentence ‘ The ocean remains a dark and stormy mess ‘…. and goes on to talk of unruly surf and closed beaches. Attractive. Not. 

But then …these are Jon Howard’s pics from today who reports improved conditions, still some sets coming in with poor viz continuing …and they saw dolphins at the point.

Jonny and I have been going to the Tuesday night BnB talks since 2011 and we have always enjoyed our evenings. If you haven’t been, do come. It’s a convivial evening with other swimmers,  and interesting speakers. 

12^th July 2022

 

At our next monthly dinner, to be held on Tuesday July 12th at Bluewater Café at 6.30 pm, the guest speaker will be Prof. Adriana Verges, the lead researcher on Operation Crayweed. Adriana will revisit Cabbage Tree Bay with an update on this project as well as the Living Seawall at Fairy Bower Pool. The seaweeds and sea grasses are the underwater forests that fuel entire ecosystems to provide food and shelter for thousands of organisms. We swim with them every day and now you can get an in-depth look at what is blooming below the surface, and the return of various marine species.  Also, discover what we can do to aid the rewilding of these underwater seascapes.

 

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $30 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each (please note, NO BYO). Bookings are essential, so to avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book HERE.

Tuesday July 5th - Quiet morning people wise

I got slammed this morning but that was just on the walk down to the beach. The weather was definitely worse than yesterday.  

Not many people about, all in their cozy beds!?

Deserted for the 7am start. No newbies either! Temp still nice at 18.1C. The pot plant from last week was hopefully rescued and not blew away.

There were still a few swimmers at 6.30, Murray enjoyed it but never has a negative word. No viz, rough and dirty was my impression although I only dipped at manly, which was lovely. 

The bench crew were there so I could leave Pickle. Thanks!

A few swimmers went to Shelley, said it was dirty but I gather half way was getting too rough with tide coming in. 

Genevieve,  Tilly and Jimbob were 3 of the 4 who braved the 7am from Manly and even seemed to have enjoyed it.

Monday, 4 July 2022 – Mother Nature recommends a coffee walk this morning

This morning Mother Nature whipped up impressive conditions, for viewing. 

There were a few brave individuals swimming a shorter lane across from fairy bower; while the rest watched the sets rolling in, with coffee in hand. 

Have a nice start to the week all!

Friday 1 July 2022 Swimming in the rain

Simon said that I would be able to  see the sand all the way. He was right but as he and the other 630 swimmers swam in the dark, I wonder how they saw it. At least I was able to identify the reason: David Clarity (not Carradine) was in Croatia recently where it was very clear and now he swam in Cabbage Tree Bay. Where it is clear. So QED. He has brought the super clear waters.

Bon voyage to Lucy who is heading off to Singapore but apparently not being deported. Hello to Sarah and Jon in HongKong. Hello to Leif from Utah - will you be back in August again? 

I saw Juliette at Shelly but where was Andrew? Looking at the turtle!!!! Which hid from me on the swim back even though I zig zaged and lingered.

This swimmer and I are glad there is no sound recording as we go in. Keep arms up for armpit protection as long as possible.
