Friday 21 My 2021 Reasons to be cheerful

Friday is the day for swimming at Manly, equal only to Saturday-Thursday. wow. There were the Freshwater supersurfathletes running into and out of the water like the chill factor was nothing to them. There was a dramatic sky with cloud but sun peeking through.

HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY CAROLINE!!! 

What did she do on this important day??? A swim at Manly of course. The right thing because with age comes wisdom and swimming at Manly is the best way to celebrate a birthday

And this young group was so excited about Caroline's birthday they spontaneously launched into the air. Twice. Ah youth!

Winter Swimming

While we had hoped that the B&B could resume its normal activities by now, we are still bound by Covid 19 restrictions with which we would be unable to fully comply. So, for the near future, B&B’s operations will continue to be suspended. This does not mean you need to stop swimming. As an encouragement to swim, B&B will offer its usual badges over the winter swimming season. To qualify for a highly prized winter badge, you need to:

• swim from Manly to Shelly and return (or halfway swim) a minimum of 20 times between 1st June and 31st August. 
• swim in at least 7 different weeks during the same period.
• log your swims.

If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (winter without wetsuit).

Since we no longer have restrictions on movement within the community, the Covid swim will no longer be a swim option and all swims must be at Manly. Should there be any restrictions imposed during the Winter period, The Covid Swim will return as an option.

New Swimmer sign-up - also caps/badges 

On Saturday 22nd May, your B&B team members will be at the benches (100 m north of the surf club, weather permitting) from 8 am until 9 am with a sign-up sheet for anyone who wants to sign up and start logging their swims. Any new swimmers who have started swimming over the summer period are invited to sign up and get their free B&B latex cap.

We will also have the following items available on the day:

• summer badges for sale at $10 each
• silicone swimming caps ready for winter - $15 each (cash only please bring the correct money)

19-05-21: More people than jimbles today!

Over the last few days, the jimbles have made their presence felt in no uncertain terms.  From all the welts, stories and screams, it seems they have absolutely outnumbered us! Today the signs have been a little more promising!

Oosty was explaining to Ros, in a very animated fashion, that while the jimbles were nasty over the weekend, today he hugged the rocks to Shelly and swam back a little further out from the rocks (but not in the middle of the bay) and he spotted none! 

 

Amanda, Georgina and Di were also hugely excited not to spot a jimble today on their return trip to Shelly! Either that or they were hailing a taxi?!?

 

Today felt warmer than yesterday - probably because it was - by 0.4 of a degree! Also there wasn't the cold breeze we had yesterday! The beach looked so inviting it was hard not to dive straight in, but donning the rashie first is still sensible given the jimbles!

 

Ian & Simon didn't spot any today either and were happily enjoying their post swim coffee, welt free! Simon is our Monday blogger and has been blogging fortnightly for years - ever since Julie Isbill left for WA! Fabulous dedication!  What a photo - two great men - dedication personified! One for the history books!!

 

Some of us swim for our exercise! Others....well....they do it the hard way!!

 

Jo was jimble free this morning too. We were reminiscing about something very funny that happened during one of the downpours at the end of last year. Let's just say it involved her foot, an umbrella and a dry person nearby!

 

I don't know who got more of a fright. The bird or the blogger!

Brian looks like he's gelled his hair up for this photo but it's the hat on the hook of course! He doesn't have any hair.

Richard returned unscathed too today but you always have to be on jimble watch. Keep our head down and eyes open! (but don't crash into anyone)

Danny and Peter were warming up nicely by the door and discussing covid appointments. Peter has the phone number if anyone needs it.

Charl has put his trust in his sister and dad to look after the gorgeous new fluffy addition to his family while he has a swim! 

 

Last but not least, Candace has decided to move to the beach and has bought all her bags with her. Hope you've got a pillow and comfy mattress in amongst all that lot!

Tuesday 18 May 2021 Blogging remotely: Jimbles, Justus, Gemma and Jesse!

The times are a changing (even though Bob Dylan is great and he can drop a final "g", I can't) and because of covid we have been working remotely or under different arrangements. Well today I am blogging without having been swimming. But really it is Elaine's blog and I am her emanuensis and that is why there are photos.

Well I am reliably informed that today is the birthday of Gemma!!!!

And when the lovely Simon heard, he was delighted. Happy birthday Gemma

16 May 2021 Single digit temps but don't duck for cover

It was always going to be difficult for Sunday to outperform Saturday.

Saturday was a day of jimble dodging, the relief of dark fins turning into dolphins (see below) and more hooters than shark sirens. But if you lined up all your ducks in row  then Sunday was a beaut -  nine degrees at 7am (felt like seven) sunny, crisp and clear and an indicator of days to come.

Above: Talking of wine, this was the art installation at the flags this morning. However it is constantly changing installation so a new four-sided artwork will have been painted by this afternoon.

Above: 'Ibis' Dave says he uses a old milk bottle filled with hot water in the colder months. However despite rummaging a few bins he has not come up with the ideal container for this winter.

Miss Freelove and the Nude Revolution (burn the budgies)

Everything changed. Instead of swimming as a synchronised group. We split into individual cells. The rule book turned to anarchy. No longer the rush to 7am, the 8 minute half way wait in arctic waters. We rebelled. We go when we want.

Today we need to take the next step in self-expression, sacrifice etiquette and rules and start the Bold and Beautiful Nude revolution. Our only constraints now are the seasons, the elements, the winds and the tides. Do away with the nets. No more ties that bind. Let’s join the free love revolution, express our individuality. The 60s saw the burning of the bra. Lets burn the budgies, let it all hang out.

12 degrees out, toes are cold. 18.8 degrees in. Dropping. Phone says strong wind warning. I don’t think so. Big crowd today. Jimble alert about half way just off bower. I run back from Shelley to capture some Express shots, Murray beats me, wow he’s fast (or I’m slow). Beautiful sunrise. viz improving but a bit milky. Better off Shelley. Gee that coffee tastes good today. Chippo positioned at ramp, snapping, chatting, flirting, normal stuff. Someone is wearing crocs with socks, oh dear TFS! Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers. That grow so incredibly high.

Do you do? Or do you don’t? Thursday 13th May

It’s been a while since we have had upper management guide us swimmers out with the “safety first” spiel ! I miss those pre pandemic days of JK and Ian standing on the wall, delivering speeches of “walk to half way” and “ swim at your own risk!!!” As well as “ it’s bloody cold in there” and yes...I was listening fellas. 

So, I feel it’s my civic duty as well as blogger privilege to remind you all of some of the do’s and the dont’s of the BnB!!! 

I’ve also enlisted the help of anyone who wants to add their 2 cents worth this morning...which, unsurprisingly is just about everyone!! 

 

Here goes; 

DO swim at your own risk and know your ability. That’s a given and also very sensible. ( warning: this list isn’t all sensible ) 

DO ease drop on the conversations of the crash test 6.30am swimmers as they emerge from the deep.  They have a lot to say...in general...and also about the conditions of the day. It also helps to spot any fresh stings or rashes on their bodies. Creepy but helpful! 

DO carry Vaseline for any chafing emergencies but DON’T accidentally apply said Vaseline to your goggles. 

DO look out for the WOW’s in the water and stop and have a chat! We love chats! 

DO take your time and check out the world under water, especially near the rocks! It’s spectacular and better than an aquarium! 

DO wave at the scuba divers! 

DO swim topless if the sea lice are biting! Just try to avoid unsuspecting oncoming crowds...or not! But I promise, the stings will be less severe. And DON’T drop your togs out in the middle! 

DO look forward to a post swim coffee or tea, and if there’s a birthday, possibly cake! 

DO turn around near the end of your swim at the point and marvel at the view. We have been nick naming it “gratitude point” A perfect spot to remember how lucky we are.  Now for some very important DON’Ts 

DON’T laugh at anyone wearing neoprene!

DON’T laugh at anyone not wearing neoprene! 

DON’T impede, scratch, elbow, kick, punch, slap, toss, or abuse others.  

DON’T be a pirate 🏴‍☠️ 

DON’T urinate on jellyfish stings...or anything really! 

After your swim DON’T drip over other peoples dry swim bags...or ‘dry’ anything really!! 

DON’T grab the fin of a shark or baby dolphin! Whilst we love admiring the sea life, be respectful. We don’t want to “fish” them off. 

Remember the ocean steals all matter of swimming aids regularly. Keep your goggles and caps on until your well clear of the waves...

 

And finally I hear you asking, “DO report on today’s swimming conditions please”  You got it...water temp 19.6 degrees and the water was pretty murky, but better than a few days ago. There were reports of blue bottles and jimbles...which reminds me “DON’T get stung “ and if you do..Helen says “DO GET OUT” 

Here are some pics and words of wisdom from the people! 

Justus and John say, “ swim at your own ability and no when not to swim and “do wear a colourful rashie so that the body is easily identified” well that escalated quickly! 

This camera shy swimmer said, “  don’t stand on the wall...and if you stand near the wall you can’t stand near the garage” no wonder he is sheepish! I believe the women of the wall may have something to say about that! 

Beautiful Bin, who taught herself to open water swim knows a lot about the Di’s and dont’s! Her tips..”don’t stop swimming and do take  a nice pic of me” Nailed it 

Amanda says “Do stop along the way and enjoy the view and don’t drown” That’s good advice. 

Lainey and Jim have lots of good Do’s and Dont’s. Our resident mermaid, Lainey says, “Do stop and smell the roses..aka groupers..although I’m not sure how the groupers  would feel about that!! Hehe and Jim said, “when you’re swimming, roll your body from side to side and don’t forget the hips!” As well as “don’t hold your breath...that never works” noted Jim! 

Bones, Bruce, Tim and Bruce ( pictured in that order...) had quite a bit of wisdom to impart. 
Bones baffled me with a double negative,

”Do start your life with a swim in the morning and don’t swim”  I will let you think about that one! 

Bruce was all about doing the biggest reach when swimming and Tim wants everyone to keep a look out for in coming swimmers. The other Bruce, “ says “ Don’t forget to set your alarm and don’t listen to the wetsuit naysayers!”  
Helen was told by her doctor”Don’t swim with a cast on but she does it anyway!” She’s a tough swimmer with her also tough buddy Chrissy. Amazing ladies.

 

A  late entry, “winter is coming so Don’t pour hot water on yourselves near the trees as it floods the wall” but “Do say hi be kind to others” oh WOW it’s anonymous..( wink wink)

Finding the Joy in today

CTB the gift that keeps on giving. Today was no exception - a beautiful moody blues view greeted us ... what’s not to like. And a great place to find joy first thing in the morning. 

One of our golden legends Errol posed for me. He recovered from a stroke and still finds joy in swimming in his 80’s. Onya lovely Errol you inspire us!

Squirrel finds the joy in his every day swim. Ask him how it was on any given day the answer is ‘fantastic’. I never rely on him assessing my swim risk appetite.

Today I met lovely ( yes everyone is lovely that’s my filter) fellow Saffer Kyle who finds joy in his 11 month old bub sweet Caroline and the beaches lifestyle. Yebo the beaches rock. 

 Nat and Pinky , lovely WOW young guns (WYG’s),
emerge with joy after a fabulous swim today. Water at 19.6 C is pretty good. 

Ian with Fi and Georgina. Ian said he found joy in Pauline of course (and his afternoon nap). Strict instructions to put in that order.
