Don't believe everything you hear about the swim conditions. It is best to come and have a look. Today there was a fairly flat sea with an occasional set of biggish waves and the temperature was 17.7.
The reports did not discourage all. Here is the A team. Some excellent swimmers here
Here is Rusty the Fish (Alternating Friday blogger with Chippo) and friend Peter. I admire them as they all have nicknames. I don't have one. I learned decisively in high school that you cannot make up a good nickname for yourself (and a good nickname is not one that involves explanation). I will make do with meeting people who have nicknames.
I am amazed at the song lyrics that Rusty and Chippo refer to in their blogs. I can't remember the title of songs or lyrics like that but if the tune starts up, I cam remember all the lyrics. Apparently so can people affected by dementia. Music is special

By my reckoning we have 2.5 more days of autumn so let's not fall for that winter schtick, ok?
Regardless of the season the moody morning light was gorgeous.
There had been some concern around huge swell, but due to it's dead south origins, our corner was fairly flat with a regular but infrequent set due to the long period between waves. But don't be fooled - unprotected breaks would not be safe for swimming.
These surfers were just a little way north of the flags and the further north the bigger the waves.
Lisa and Bin
Relatively few people today
Fiona, one of the red headed wows
Mum to be and Grandma seriously wannabe. Jac has less than 4 weeks to go and is still swimming. We can't wait to meet her little one, definitely won't be short of aunties
The question of the season..... are there jimbles? Thankfully no.
What no fish? Here you go then
What am I listening to? A song about Autumn from across the planet a long long time ago. Look at those kids going wild! it is my personal opinion that Ray Davies is a god

Where did the 6.30 express go?
Found them! A bit icy at Shelley today.
Lost in the inception. If your head explodes with dark forebodings too...
“Horny for Love” screams the A frame around the neck of a wild haired crazy on my drive. The Loonies are out. The full moon high in the sky, Jupiter and Saturn drowned out. I fear rivers over flowing, I hear the voice of rage and ruin. Great turn out today. Winter is 4 days away and it’s coming. Lainey has declared her first wetsuit winter, my resolve to winter in the arctic is wavering already.
Highly recommend some daily photos by one of the bold and beautiful on IG (today as above)
Hey Andy, are you goofing on Elvis?
Rusty and Chippo’s Pitch report
Sunrise at 6.47, an underlying 1.7 pulse of a swell. 17.8 chalked up. I’m sure it’s less. After this week’s swell the viz has improved considerably. The theory is a full moon, the bigger the tide, the more active the fish. At the point sand has kicked up everywhere, a couple of striped fish and some luderick. Swam the inside passage today towards half way. Fish everywhere, juvenile Kingfish, a couple of schools of mullet, baby fish everywhere. Came across the biggest flathead I’ve ever seen 1metre long and about 40cm wide, a bloody cracker.
And everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
Mermaids and Mermen out in force. Voldermort lurks in the shadows.
Feet they hardly touch the ground, my feet don't hardly make no sound.
Chippo is recovering from some surgery (rumoured cosmetic, something about preparing for the dark mofo in Hobart). This week's vaccine was washed down by beers, rump steak, 2 scoops of Copenhagen at the Quiz night, but both of us swimming like a sack of potatoes. Good to be back in the water though. 4 days to answer some questions. Jocelyn's blog on Libido and the advantages of cold water therapy seem to be tipping the scales towards a WWW.
Thanks for the swim team, don't let your true love run cold!

Now of all the issues close to the heart of swimmers (or should I say close to the bottom of swimmers) is the humble tog. So this morning I asked swimmers, "What togs do you wear and why?" This issue needs to be covered and here's here our swimmers responded, no ifs, no buts...The Tog Blog

Winter Swimming
While we had hoped that the B&B could resume its normal activities by now, we are still bound by Covid 19 restrictions with which we would be unable to fully comply. So, for the near future, B&B’s operations will continue to be suspended. This does not mean you need to stop swimming. As an encouragement to swim, B&B will offer its usual badges over the winter swimming season. To qualify for a highly prized winter badge, you need to:
If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (winter without wetsuit).
Since we no longer have restrictions on movement within the community, the Covid swim will no longer be a swim option and all swims must be at Manly. Should there be any restrictions imposed during the Winter period, The Covid Swim will return as an option.
New Swimmer sign-up - also caps/badges
On Saturday 22nd May, your B&B team members will be at the benches (100 m north of the surf club, weather permitting) from 8 am until 9 am with a sign-up sheet for anyone who wants to sign up and start logging their swims. Any new swimmers who have started swimming over the summer period are invited to sign up and get their free B&B latex cap.
We will also have the following items available on the day:
Message from Duncan
Keep warm this winter swimming season and help raise funds for the Tim Keith’s film documentary ‘The bold and beautiful’. The film’s targeted completion date isthe 1st of July 2021 and we need your support to fund the final cut.
John Hill legendary triathlete and owner of Fastgear Australia has agreed to help film funding by donating the profits of orca swimming wetsuit sold in May 2021. For every wetsuit purchased at RRP Fastgear will donate the mark up to fund film expenses. (limited of 20 customers). Make sure you tell the store that you are raising funds for the documentary
I can highly recommend Fastgear as the swimmers wetsuit store and their insight and experience is invaluable in ensuring you get the right suit and right size. Online www.fastgear.com.au, email [email protected] or via phone (02) 8068 6229
Help us fund the final cut and keep warm at the same time.

Wednesday 26th May:
air temperature at 6:30am 18.3 degrees
water temperature: 18.8 degrees! warmer in than out - just!
conditions: bumpy all the way, strong current, a challenging workout but salty joy!
Sky: a kaleidoscope of pink, grey, red, yellow & orange
ambience: buzzing!
The water has warmed up (well relatively speaking) over the last few days as Lake manly transformed from a Swimmers & underwater photographers paradise to a surfers paradise. However i presume the cuttlefish are relishing their privacy during mating season!
And The count down to winter is on! 5 days away! So Its decision time - do i suffer for a bit longer and go for the Winter Without Wetsuit badge? or do I suffer just because there are so many benefits to swimming in cold water? Or are you a Wim Hof convert or just curious to see how long you can last?
Amongst the more well publicised benefits, fun fact: did you know cold water is also supposed to increase libido (according to a study by UK's thrombosis research institute - cited at "www.swimjim.com")? I suspect some of our swimmers may be puzzled by this as it seems at odds with another - less enticing - side effect of cold water swimming...
Cold water swimming is also said to increase "brown fat" which actually generates heat which can a) help build tolerance to the cold (which is great if you are planning on an English Channel swim for example!) and b) is said to help burn calories & improve metabolism, helping with weight loss (so you can have your cake - or in my case ice cream and chocolate - too - in moderation of course!)!. (https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/swimming-with-brown-fat/ )
However, swimming in cold water must be considered with safety in mind. If, like me, you are prone to feeling the cold or hypothermia or have other medical conditions, it is wise to limit &/or gradually increase your time in cold water, research and/or see your doctor before undertaking the WWW challenge (much as badges are really tempting!)! Here is one of many useful articles about safety in cold water swimming to assist your decision making: https://oceanfit.com.au/everything-you-need-to-know-about-swimming-in-cold-water/
If you are considering forgoing the WWW badge and buying a wetsuit for the first time and haven't already, here is a useful guide (one of many - the interweb is full of guides!): https://oceanfit.com.au/what-to-look-for-in-an-open-water-swimming-wetsuit/ . Local business Manly Boards has a good selection & provides great advice, or, for those who live closer to or work in the city, Fastgear on York St is my go-to. A Neoprene cap & swim "socks" and perhaps swim gloves are also recommended by many BB'ers (and within the "rules" - which are simply- no neoprene warming aids on your body but you can wear a rash top - if you are not sure if your attire complies, Ian has kindly offered to inspect it🤔 )..
But first - for those who have been living under the sea, there is a movie called Salt Joy (about the B&B) being made by Indie film maker Tim Keith. You may have seen Tim hanging around the surf club & in the water filming over the last few months, or even becoming one of the stars! On Monday night, a fundraiser was held at the Steyne to help Tim raise the funds to complete the project which, after the world premiere in July, will really put the B&B on the world stage as an awesome swimming community & showcase our beautiful playground, and not to mention unearth hidden talents & create a few stars (agents reading this - take note!). The Brains Trust of the evening (pictured below - Duncan, Frangi, Drinks, Lainey - missing Michelle and Simon) hosted a super-fun evening where we all found out how knowledgeable, or, conversely, "full of shite - we all were.... (note - the WOWs were the worthy winners, clearly very knowledgeable!).. after being shown a trailer of the movie the excitement was contagious and resulted in a frenzy of bidding for live and silent auction items. Thanks to the wonderful B&B community for supporting such a fun and important project - if you weren't able to make it on the night, do consider donating via Tim's GofundMe page:
https://www.gofundme.com/f/hel
Given the conditions, the beach front was pretty quiet this morning. Not a lot of people around, even to walk, coffee etc. Perhaps they were relishing a rare sleep in! But those who did venture down made the most of being by the sea - swim, walk, coffee or just a quick dip! However a common theme was joy at being around salty vitamin sea.
Ian, Craig and David were up early to start their swim from Shelly... Ian is without a wetsuit all year but Craig and David prefer to wear them..
Frances, Des & Katherine swam from Manly with the Drinks Express, however mindful of the conditions they swam out in, they walked back from Shelly. Frances was hoping to photograph some cuttlefish - however sadly visibility was terrible. All three remarked that they wish they were brave enough to swim without a wetsuit, or back through the waves at manly! However, kudos to these three who always also look to retrieve pollution from the bay - today it was sadly a mask that is now deposited where it belongs, in a bin! thanks ladies!
Anna, Leisel and Marinelle swam from manly but finished their return swim at the pool... all winter without wetsuit (dont be fooled - Anna's full body suit is to ward off jimbles - no neoprene in sight!)!
Paul and Paul had swum one lap manly - shelly - manly - reported that it was very bumpy (worse than it looked) and very hairy around the point (both ways!).
Ingrid, Sarah, Mel and Brooke decided a walk was in order, and Sir Basil (the labradoodle) didnt disagree! Winter without wetsuit for all these lovely mermaids when the sea calms down!
Kara swam the whole way from Manly - shelly - Manly - reported rough conditions and she was pinned down at the point - thankfully she is ok and now with a well earned heart warming coffee. Kara showed me her cold hands and despite being susceptible to the cold, always winter without wetsuit after starting her ocean swimming adventures 5 years ago! Kara provided some great advice for those of us new to winter swimming sans wetsuit - a metal bottle containing boiling water, wrapped in a towel, hot water bottle for the shower, hot water for the shower and of course warm clothes! thanks Kara I will be taking your advice as I start my winter without wetsuit adventure!
Amanda, Georgina, Row, Deb & Di with four legged buddy Holly - these brave WOW are all WWW! (Men of the Door take note of these brave ladies!)
Jesse, Cherie & Jim Bob - Jesse will brave WWW, the others wish they were that brave... described todays swim as very choppy and hard work!
Walter was so happy to see his buddy Sir Basil again!
Vitamin Sea, however infused (in, on or by the water) is indeed the BEST way to start the day!
But before I leave you to continue your day, A few announcements - "the rules" for the winter swimming badges & the next BB dinner!
have a great day!
Jocelyn

B&B monthly dinner – 8th June 2021
The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 8th June at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. To celebrate World Oceans Day, this month’s speaker is Robert Olive, co-ordinator and a senior turtle carer from the Australian Seabird Rescue (ASR) organisation, whose volunteers have been rescuing seabirds and sea turtles along the NSW coastline for over 25 years. Robert will talk about the amazing work they do and specifically about the rescue, rehabilitation and release of two green sea turtles, Billie and Ella in Cabbage Tree Bay.
There will be the opportunity to sign up to a Volunteers First Responders Training Course to be held on 26 June in Manly to learn about the capture, handling and first aid of seabirds, turtles and other coastal wildlife. Dinner attendees will also have an opportunity to help fund this important work. On the night, Bommie Australia, a Manly conscious clothing & beachwear brand, will donate 50% of all sales of their ocean inspired swim goggle bag range and beach accessories to ASR.
The cost of the dinner is great value at only $30 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each (please note, NO BYO). Bookings are essential, so to avoid disappointment and secure your spot please book at www.boldandbeautifulmanly.com.au/bb-bluewater-monthly-dinner.html .

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL SWIM SQUAD IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING
DUE TO PUBLIC HEALTH WARNINGS ON THE RISKS OF CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19).
Thank you for following public health advice at all times.
To keep informed of events please read notices at the end of the blog.
It was all happening at Manly and in CTB this morning. Huge waves arriving with the easterly swell, a strong rip, high tide causing a big rebound off the walkway and a washing machine effect in the bay. I saw white horses (wave caps) facing out of the bay. Some of the bold swam out through the surf, halfway at the Bower was not an easy option, a number took the Shelly beach option for shorter and longer swims. The truly beautiful took the coffee option, walked, chatted and admired the fabulous scenery and respected the power of the sea. Water temp today 18.9 deg C :)
The Bold and Beautiful fundraising quiz night for the production of the "Salt Joy" video was a huge success.
Much fun was had by all and the winning team...(drum roll)..was
L-R Izzy, Anne, Fiona, Jan, Helen, Belinda, Amanda and Flip, pictured below
At the time of going to press there no details of the fundraising totals or images so stay tuned.
A huge thank you to those who attended and the magnificent sponsors who gave so generously we are truly a lucky group to have such support from near and a far.

Today we celebrate the man who’s work allows us to prepare and anticipate for what we should expect from Manly to Shelly each morning before 'toe hits water'. What two white chalked numbers are going to be put up on the wall of wisdom after Ian takes the 'official and final' reading – its the most anticipated piece of data for swimmers (Outside of the first in line Bluey/Jimble report of course…) - The water temperature.
Happy birthday Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (24 May 1686 – 16 September 1736)
Best known as the inventor of the mercury-in-glass thermometer, which was the first accurate and usable thermometer, and of the Fahrenheit scale, which was the first temperature scale widely adopted and standardized.
We thank you, Daniel, for your more than useful contribution to society; One that has stood the test of time and added value to all of us in some way big or small.
As we enter one of the most serene times of the year to swim its also this time of the year we start to shift our eyes to the mercury vial for the much coveted water temps. From not wanting to be caught off guard with your attire, simply curious, or force of habit, its something we all cant help but take part in.
So what sort of Temperature Gazer are you?
Whatever persona you fall into i think we can all agree that Daniel has given us a note-worthy tool or...at the very least a decent topic of conversation (or blog topic) for the day.
Have a great week all

DUE TO PUBLIC HEALTH WARNINGS ON THE RISKS OF CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19).
Thank you for following public health advice at all times.
To keep informed of events please read notices at the end of the blog.
Loving a lazy, late start on a Sunday morning. After a big week there is nothing better than getting out of the early rising routine and have a leisurely mid-morning swim. The sun was shining and the water sparkling on my arrival and as I entered the water the first splash told me that winter was coming, 17 odd deg C felt a lot colder than the 19 odd deg C of last week. Despite the first chill I was excited that the jimbles had departed and the viz was improving.
Looking out over the beautiful CTB
With the cooler water in Cabbage Tree Bay (CTB) comes the arrival of the Port Jacksons, Crested Horn Sharks and their offspring. I was excited to see this beautiful crested horn shark swim below me this morning.
Below is a tiny, newly hatched Port Jackson, taken a week ago (note the saddle marking on its back)
Some giant cuttlefish were spotted today around from the point and along the reef towards Shelly beach. If you have the travel bug you might like to see hundreds of these cuttlefish in the wild at Whyalla, SA.
Follow the link below to read more.
Looking for the giant cuttlefish. We spotted it near the point, the one above.
Plentiful yellowtail now visible once more :)
Helena and Christine now signed up and ready to do log and enjoy their swims.

It's ok to be vulnerable. Its ok to be cold. Its ok to be a princess. Are you ok? Every day we swim we get stronger. Mentally and physically.
Rusty and chippos pitch report:
Flat no swell. Beanies. Jon still in his shorts, can't be that cold. Faint southerly. Full tide. Chippo has a wind up his tutu. Trooper stirring the troops about softness and wetsuit wearing? 20% don the wetty. 17.3 and a bit chillier at Shelley. Turtle spotted at half way. Clear, flat with a lot manly men and women out early.
Come on girls, let’s go shopping.
You can’t do that with a ping pong ball?!
Stop wearing out that mirror!
Come on, Bernice. It's so funny you'll laugh so hard your lashes will curl all by themselves.
Time to board the Priscilla bus and drive to our next adventure. Bernice Rusty and Felicia Jollygoodfellow Chippo.
