Morning! Firstly I would like to introduce myself so i apologise if this is a bit long for a first blog. I'm Jocelyn and i normally swim with the fabulous Mermaids and manmaids (aka Mer-people) at 6:30-7:00am.
Although ive been swimming & spending time at the beach all my life, I'm new to Ocean Swimming (May last year, when i joined B&B) and this is my very first blog of any kind! Over 5 years ago a friend started ocean swimming from being a non-swimmer (via Can Too) & inspired me to think about it. The seed was planted but I let fear stop me from taking that first step. Then 3 years ago I met someone whose passion for the ocean and swimming was similarly contagious, and I finally caught the bug - the seed that had been planted several years earlier began to flourish but due to being a natural over thinker I again let my fears take over my head space, taking several baby steps before COVID forced me to speed up addressing my many fears if i wanted to do it. Whilst the fears are still there (thats for another blog), I am absolutely addicted, & inspired every day by the beauty around us, my friends who exude sheer & infectious happiness & joy & cameraderie, the stories, the photos, brought to life through the daily B&B blog. Thank you for encouraging (you know who you are!) & entrusting me to join the amazing family of bloggers. I am very nervous, humbled but excited to share the beauty of cabbage tree bay, stories, photos and hopefully contribute to the fabulous cameraderie & maybe those stories will inspire someone to start, or continue an ocean swimming journey - or even plant a seed to develop a relationship with the ocean.
So, onto today:
Buoyant - on all counts - was the vibe this morning in and out of the water, and how we seem to feel after every swim.
Buoyant: defined as "able or tending to keep afloat or rise to the top of a liquid or gas" and "cheerful and optimistic". Buoyancy - thats what I dont have now ive ditched the wetsuit in the warmer water .... its pretty annoying really, slowing down, but its also an inspiration to become a better & faster swimmer. but then again, life in the slow lane is sometimes a blessing at times.... taking time to appreciate the natural beauty & creatures of the Bay.
If you didnt get down for a swim this morning, i will try to describe it: Mother nature was kind to us today. The sun was shining, a few whispy clouds dotted the sky, zephyrs of breeze made ripples on the water, the tide was high, the swell was low, the water was a balmy 21.8 degrees (oh so close to that magic 22!) - and at 6:30 when I arrived, the same as the air temperature which was rapidly rising (as were the smiles as swimmers came in!). Definitely a day to drag oneself out of bed at dawn for a daily dose of Vitamin Sea!
156 swimmers joined the "drinks express" this morning according to Roger - here they are i a hurry wading in - pretty much on schedule!
and here they are swimming (aka racing) back:
Roger and Ali had swum earlier and described the water as "soft", their mood was buoyant... "couldnt wait to get in" was a common theme of early swimmers...
Jo and Danny had completed their regular Wednesday "sawtooth" swim, approx 2kms of "in and out" and the occasional party wave. they described their swim as "so much fun" ... their beaming smiles say it all!
sometimes they join a "party wave" like this one:
Ros collected some rubbish from near the waters edge - thanks Ros for taking "three for the sea" for all of us this morning. Rubbish can be ingested by so many sea creatures, leading to illness or worse. a reminder to all of us to pick up any rubbish we see - awareness & spreading the message will hopefully lead to a world without rubbish (ok so that might be utopia).. So, without the rubbish our amazing cabbage tree bay residents can remain, buoyant. Ros was also waiting for reports of very buoyant Bluebottles, thankfully the bay was reported as clear so in she went!..
And then there's the latest fashion statement - Buoyancy shorts. Apparently they were on special on boxing day and clearly everyone who ordered them has just received their delivery. A number of Drinks Express racers certainly seemed to have received theirs .... Here we have Lisa, Craig (who received his delivery & loves them!), Ann & David.
