For whatever reason, I am party to discussions about the pace of swimming.
You can see lots of swimmers with Garmin/Apple/Suunto watches so they must know what their pace is.
But what is a normal or good pace? Well, that is the personal best pace for each swimmer of course. But google says that the average pace (I did search for the mean pace but got undesirable results) is 2 minutes for each 100 metres. That is a factoogle. That is, it is a fact provided by Google in reply to my search. This is personal to me as there is an algorithm which decides what results I will see when I search, based on what else I look for. my browser history shows I search for things like how to improve technique; correct body position; what is a catch; dryland exercises for improving technique and so on. If I had a different browsing history perhaps the factoogle would be different.
The result is very interesting. So for comparison, I took a look at the results for the Cole Classic 1 km in 2019, it gives you a survey sample of 1783 swimmers including back of the pack and also elite, and a range of ages and genders. I will post the analysis in the near future. I find that checking my pace especially when I have been to a workshop to improve, provides inexhaustible topics of conversation (my poor husband mispronounces this as "exhausting" topic of conversation).
