BOLD & BEAUTIFUL IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING DUE TO THE RISKS OF CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19). IT IS IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE PHYSICAL DISTANCING AND FOLLOW PUBLIC HEALTH ADVICE.
Thank you for swimming at different times of the day and
please, please continue to maintain 1.5m distance - even in blog photos!
Brilliant sunshine today.
The water temp was 15.0 deg C and much warmer than the BnB record breaking temp of 14.2 deg C yesterday!!
Every day I'm amazed at the diversity of marine species found in and around our own Cabbage Tree Bay. Below are photos taken today and during this week illustrating this diversity. The fabulous image of a giant smooth stingray (Bathytoshia brevicaudata) below, was taken by swimmer Mark Morgan and generously shared with us. Simply stunning!
Throughout September we have been excited by the return of the Port Jackson sharks but rarely do we spot their egg cases. With its nose, the female PJ wedges the egg case into a rock crevice where it remains for 10-12 months before the PJ hatches. Image of this egg case was captured and shared by Elizabeth Stewart whose birthday it is today(see below) .
One of the many PJs that I spotted resting near a rock ledge in the CTB "nursery" this week.
We were all excited to see this giant Wobbegong. The first I've seen this season. I'm sure there will be many more to get excited about, as the sea warms.
Amazing camouflage of this flathead which is essential for it to escape from predators above and below the water.
Cormorant resting before taking the plunge
Its Elizabeth's birthday today. Elizabeth is our Friday blogger who generously steps in at other times to help keep the daily blog going. Thank you Elizabeth and Happy Birthday. Back in the day we would have had birthday splashes and singing at Shelly beach for Elizabeth. Sending virtual splashes and the song from all at BnB. Hoping to Catch up for splashes at Shelly this week.
Matt and Katie are locals who have been enjoying the swim even more so during the new normal. Matt completed his first winter challenge this year and is about to order his badge this week. Katie enjoys a more leisurely routine, swimming on weekends and photographing the marine life.
Craig(left) was swimmer of the day yesterday and missed his 15 minutes of fame so here is a lovely photo of him today with his swim buddies about to add another swim to his tally.
Is this you? An early bird swimmer returning to Manly
Two more early birds returning to Manly
Winter badges have never been so popular, they are flying out through the now snail mail(with letterbox deliveries every second day only). There are plenty left so if you haven't got yours yet here's what to do..
There is only one way you can obtain your badge(s)
- Inside a self-addressed, stamped envelope place cash for your badge/s- $10 per badge for the Covid Badge (if you completed 20 swims over 7 weeks this winter) and an extra $10 for the Ice Cold Corona Badge if you did those swims without a wetsuit. Family members/friends sharing an envelope must clearly name each swimmer and badge achieved. Please check postage rates and size of envelope required for multiple badges.
- Post this envelope in another envelope to Ian Forster, 6 Bligh St, Northbridge. 2063.
Badges will be posted as soon as they arrive. If you have any other badges that you are missing and wish to purchase, please include cash for those as well.
What I'm listening to is The Night Driver a podcast by Hedley Thomas of THE AUSTRALIAN investigating Janine Vaughan's mysterious disappearance 19 yrs ago from a NSW country town.
Enjoy a beautiful Sunday, cheers
