BOLD & BEAUTIFUL IS NOT CURRENTLY RUNNING DUE TO THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL DISTANCING AND STAYING INSIDE AS MUCH AS IS POSSIBLE DUE TO CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19).
Coral and Pearl have been wanting to share one their new found isolation hobbies since their last post so thought we could all try some origami today. Before we do, a big mermaid shout out to Melise who turned 60 today - happy birthday!
Before we get started, here is a sea lion Coral and Pearl made earlier. To build you own, find a perfectly square piece of paper that is as thin as possible:
Step 1: 1. Fold and unfold along the dotted lines. This step seems to be at the heart of all origami. 2. Fold points A and B in to meet at the center that will make a kite shape. 3. Fold point C and D in to meet at the center.
Picture is demonstrating what your ori-sea-lion should like like at the end of each stage:
Step 2: This is slightly annoying so hope the pic does it justice. Reach in at the arrows and pull points A and B (from step 2) down to meet along the center as shown. Flatten more than Coral & Pearl are demonstrating here:
Step 3: 5. Easy one - Fold in half backward along the center line (make sure the flappy bit is on the outside):
Step 4: 6. Now position your paper as shown. Fold upward along the dotted line (left hand side of your paper) and unfold (you are making a crease). 7. You are going to push up from the middle and in until you hit the middle line and flatten so you have a straight neck looking straight up. 8 Fold forward along the top of the what will be neck. Unfold so a crease only. Fold the top point in and down from the middle and flatten - this will form the head:
Step 5: 9. To make the nose, you will make a similar fold. Fold point A inward along the dotted line as far as it will go and flatten. 10. Stick your finger in the side flipper to open (where the arrow is). Flatten. Repeat on the other side:
Step 6: Those with a keen eye will notice we skipped step 11 - it is to fold the flippers at the base. The Mermaids think it looks more majestic without but see the blue sea lion if you wish to replicate! 12. Fold tail forward and back along the dotted line and unfold. Our scissors in the pic are very small but cut the tail down the middle of the fold line by less than an inch and then fold out for the full tail effect. 13. The best part - add a mouth and eyes and you are done!!!!!
Acknowledgements: Coral and Pearl have totally used the origami steps & paper from this below pack. For those of you interested to get more Under the Sea friends, they highly recommend you go to Humphrey's as the pictures are more precise than they have managed to demonstrate today!
Something to watch:
A Kiwi film-maker and outdoor swimmer based in London, Patrick McLennan, thought B&B swimmers might be interested in watching his film, The Ponds, about the all year-round swimmers of Hampstead Heath, London. We are sure it will resonate with many of our swimmers and is a nice feel good story of healthy, well-being and passion for the cold water buzz, a nice light relief movie to enjoy at this time...
