As I mill around the wall I hear lots of interesting theories and tid bits about ocean swimming. Such as,
does spitting in the goggles actually do anything except, well, put spit in your eyes?
Can you smash your breakfast right before the 6k and survive.
Is it possible to swim in a straight line blindfolded? Or is it even possible to swim in a straight line at all?
So to answer these fishy questions and other bits of flotsam (see what I did there?) I’ve turned to the brains trust that is The BnB swimmers…and google.
Myth 1:
Can you swim in a straight line blindfolded?
The simple answer? No…not even if you’re part of the ‘A’ team. We all favour one side and since nobody has a perfect symmetrical stroke then you would just swim in circles. Which incidentally, is me…most days…sans blindfold!!
Myth 2:
Can you swim on a full stomach? Yes
Will you cramp and drown from it? Most probably not. What is most interesting about this myth is that it has been doing the circuit for a while now, and did you know that there is not one documented death from eating and swimming?. So ‘gaahead’…chow down on your coffee and banana bread at 6.55am and go for it.
Myth 3:
If you get caught in a powerful rip you can be swept out to sea forever?
Even in the worst rips, you won’t get sucked out into the middle of the ocean. Although, it may be along swim back to shore.
Myth 4:
Does peeing on a blue bottle sting help stop the pain?
Any volunteers???
I have heard that peeing in a wetsuit warms you up in the water on a cold winter day! Hu hum, so they tell me… ‘winky face’.
Myth 5:
And staying on the subject of wetsuits, “Do you burn more calories struggling to take a wetsuit on and off than you do swimming” Google was cagey on this one. After almost always dislocating my shoulders to get mine on and off I’m inclined to think, YES doh!!…
Myth 6: (and often causes the most controversy)
Does spitting in your goggles help with anti fog ?
I am going to turn to the people for this one…
Suze and Heather were a little divided about the spitting...Heather believes baby shampoo is the way to go!
these youngans were also debating about the quality of the spit!
What you’ve eaten the night before and how much is too much!
Georgina thought said that she finds champagne does the trick...ahhhh now that’s worth experimenting with!! I think she meant to say shampoo...Freudian slip right there.
There was also a myth about our infamous swimwear! Particularly the men’s. Are they really smuggling budgies??? Ian said someone suggested he was more smuggle than budgie...too much information Ian!
The rains are coming. Which begs the next myth! Is the water warmer when it rains? Fiona and Henrietta believes it’s definitely feels that way.
And the myth that Rusty left the BNB for good is debunked...cause here he is! In the flesh with Leslie . Welcome back Rusty!
Simon and Sterling. Apparently Simon beat Sterling. So Simon was happy to add that “the myth that the A team are the fastest swimmers isn’t true!”
And newbie Ralf, all the way from Germany was a little bit worried about the stories he has heard of Sharks in the water...that’s no myth Ralf! But we will look after you.
And the myth that Sue is a mermaid isn’t really true! Although she swims like one.
Have any other myths you want busted?? pop them in the comments below and we will do our best.
And the last pic of the day are these beautiful Buddhist nuns gettingn some fresh air at the beach! And that my friends, is no myth!
todays stats;
1 newbie and about 156 swimmers!
water temp 21.5 degrees ( John has a new thermometer...hooray)
