Wednesday 11th March: Clear, calm, dark, crisp and definitely bold

Dear readers, did you know there is a group of adventurous 6am swimmers that do Wednesday Ins and Outs? They bravely set off with their torches, swim along the stinger special coastline then play in and out of the waves each week. They are definitely living up to the *bold* of our namesake.

Autumn has arrived with it still being dark when the alarm goes off and remaining distinctly dark pre-dusk for our 6:30am starters. Zip up jumpers are now appearing with the brisker morning starts but don’t be fooled, the swim this morning was a spectacular one with sunrise and full moon in view as well as dusky whalers, port jacksons, garfish and many other sightings in the clearer waters (with the slight exception of that band of seaweed at the start & finish line).

Today’s swim was mostly overcast in relatively warm 22 deg water with 100+ swimmers.

Some decisions are not always the best ones

On running down to the shore to catch the early swimmers this morning, I was assaulted (yes assaulted!) by a truly awful smell. So awful I can't think of a family friendly way to describe it so I won't even try. We all need our immune systems to be working in this time of plague, confusion and no bog rolls, so I decided today's blog would be a Dry Blog.

Turned out I may have been over-reacting. Or just being a wuss.

Friday 6 March 2020 SPRUNG!

Well Autumn has sprung - if that can be an expression - and today I was sprung by Bruce from the A Team as he noted I only photograph the good looking. True. I blog the BB swimming group which is comprised of swimmers all of whom are good looking and, being swimmers above average intelligence. Forget lake Wobegone. We have the sea. And today it was a real challenge. First of all, on approach, it stunk. Hopefully it was decomposing seaweed and not an issue related to north head sewerage works. Secondly, there was a sea mist covering the beach. Nice but it was hard to see what was going on. The surf life savers could see and they closed the beach. Lastly, there was a lot of rubbish in the water which is never nice to swim amongst. Even half way was yucky

Nonetheless it was a lovely scene around the club today with swimmers approaching, looking, assessing what they would do (taking account of their own ability) and just looking great:

We listened to the announcement of John Kelly and also the life savers. The announcement over the tannoy said to notice the beach being closed and not to go in and risk your own life and the lives of the life savers. dramatic but excellent advice. It is necessary to assess your ability against the conditions. A day like today reminds me both of how far I have come as  pool swimmer entering the sea as my own form of midlife crisis. I am proud of how far up the skill mountain I have climbed. However, the skill mountain is very high and I very much admire those more skilled than me. They are not chucking themselves in; they know what the conditions require and enter if it is ok for them. If not, there is half wya, Shelly Beach, the Harbour and also another day.

Last chance for a 10km swim this saturday 

What I am reading:

I have recently read the Chestnut men, Nordic noir  novel - a good read but gory. I am now finish another nordic noir For the Missing and will shortly read Ask me Why Im Stood Here - a book about a Bristol Channel Swim. I had to order it from amazon uk as apparently we here in australia can't handle this story of a swim which is 21 km long, has a 14m tidal range (yikes) and a 17mph tidal flow in the highest range so needs a lot of planning. Warmest tem it gets is 16 degrees C. Sorry if you can't handle this information being brought into Australia! I have also had to use connections and arrangements to get Andre Wiersig's book about his swims to Australia. The purpose of these regional restrictions on books eludes me. 

Thursday 5 March: Chin up day

Another wet and choppy morning swim with a low turnout as you would expect. You'll see from the smiles below, the damp weather didn't affect these swimmers, because we know about the affects weather can have on our mood and wellbeing.

 

It’s not surprising that the temperature gives us lots of metaphors for moods. With phrases like "she’s as cold as ice", or "he's hotheaded". We know sunshine affects our mood by boosting our serotonin - the happy chemical in our brain. And research shows shows that happy people have better relationships, make more money, and find more meaning in life. So on cloudy days like today, with little or no sunshine, we need to be more vigilant about keeping our mood up. The rain too, makes life more challenging. It makes everything from what to wear, how to travel, and just simply keeping dry a lot more tricky.

So we need to make a bigger effort than normal to keep our chin up and feel the sunshine even when it’s raining, because we can’t control the weather but we can control how we think about it.

4-03-2020: wet wednesday - gloomy or glorious?

There were two schools of thought, in addition to schools of fish, on the conditions of the swim today! Sue Marinan gave it thumbs down with words along the lines of gloomy, dark, bumpy, wet, cold! Ros Ex and Petra, on the other hand, thought it was fabulous, glorious, beautiful and smooth at Shelly.

Petra, fellow wednesday blogger, is having the time of her life!

 

Lainey, who thinks every swim is fabulous, was wondering where all the people were. She found out they were all out buying toilet paper. FYI - Scomo has put a level 4 restriction on toilet paper now so it can only be used outside of 10am and 4pm.

 

Some lucky swimmers were able to make it to the swim as their supermarkets had already run out of toilet paper. 

 

This looks bit dark and gloomy - but lets not be 'glass half empty' and see it for what it really is - a beautiful photo of no pollution and free of any beings.

For those of you who did turn up for the swim today, did any of you spot this in the water? I'm referring to the octopus, not to Jonathon, below, who was definitely in the water. By the time he got to work, I'm sure he would have been as wet as he'd been when he got out of the water. Should have stayed in his cossie.

For those of you who did turn up for the swim today, did any of you spot this in the water? I'm referring to the octopus, not to Jonathon, below, who was definitely in the water. By the time he got to work, I'm sure he would have been as wet as he'd been when he got out of the water. Should have stayed in his cossie.

The next B&B monthly dinner will be held on Tuesday 10th March at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Special guest, David Webster, will present the range of Bold and Beautiful wines especially for B&B members and their friends. The Bold and Beautiful wines were born out of the idea of creating a village wine for Manly.
