There were two super birthdays today. Rob is 40!!!!! But we did not get to sing because of the bluebottles scattering the swimmers . But happy birthday to you

Just a delicious warm, flat, low tide morning - as always perfect conditions for a swim. We are almost into February and the New Year seems like such a long time ago. I thought about new years resolutions, and my 2020 vision for the future. The 2020 year for 2020 vision. And I thought about how important it is to make resolutions every moment not just every year. Every moment asking for what we really want in life in clear detail. Literally picturing it in our minds. Then believing we can get it, we deserve it, and that it’s comingtowards us, just like we are coming towards it. And finally acting as if we have it already and living in joy and gratitude for that abundance - like the ocean - it’s all around us. Just asking, believing and receiving every moment of every day. Sounds like a plan. Here are some of the great people I’m so grateful to be around.

28/01/2020 - Bold, Beautiful and Brainy

Our gorgeous Head of Emergency Dr had a birthday today, a very big birthday! Happy Birthday Michele, 60 years young... looking fit and fab and saving lives and helping people every day. You're incredible and we wish you the happiest of birthdays!

A beautiful morning, much smaller group and a warning about possible bluebottles after Martin (the Danish one) came back with a stung arm. Most early swimmers didn't see any though. We were all happy with the 24.4 degree water temp recorded on the board...

Roz found Michele a card that read 'Bold, Beautiful and Brainy'. That's Dr Mich alright, although throw in a bit of 'Zaney' too!

There were a few crashing waves as we went in so I took the opportunity to get the odd crazy shot. Thanks Gunar, Richard and Marco :-)

We make our way to Shelly through quite a big swell. We wake up the neighbours singing Happy Birthday to Michele. I ask her to keep her eyes open but as you can see it's hard when you're being splashed!

If you would like to become swimmer of the year for 2020 it's simple. All you have to do is:

• swim at  least once in every month
• log your swims

The more times you swim, the more chances you get to win the prize. Rob swam 159 times through the year to win the big prize.

The first B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 11th February at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Our guest on the night will be Julianna Kadar, who is a PhD student at Macquarie University. She is also a member of the Homeward Bound Program which is working to build and upskill a network of 1,000 women in STEM over ten years. Julianna will talk about her study on the Behaviour of Port Jackson Sharks. Her work involves finding out more about the activity patterns of the Port Jackson shark using bio-loggers. Her study includes both captive and wild experiments and aims to analyse distinct shark behaviour signatures. Her talk will cover variation in behaviour, social networks and migration of our lovable PJ.

It’s a public holiday so there were 500 swimmers. The water temp was a toasty 23 degrees.

Not just any long weekend

26 January is currently celebrated as Australia Day

The original human inhabitant of this generally refer to 26 January as Invasion Day or Survival Day. Something for us to turn our minds to, I believe.

Being part of the B&B blogging community is so special. My fellow bloggers always inspire me with their perspective, commentary and photography. I like to think we push each other along.

The water was not clear today and I had to get close up to capture these mermaids (photogaphically that is, mermaids are way too cunning to ever be caught by mere humans)


Can you see the fiddler ray in amongst the churned up sand and rubbish? Thought not, but it was there. There was lots of rubbish. Be like Edwina and many others and please bring rubbish out of the water. Special call-out to Upper Management Ian who brought a bright blue plastic ice cream container from the middle of the bay all the way back to Shelly. On his head. Impressive.

Taking a leaf out of Elizabeth's book today, and will mention books (well one book) not music. I'm currently reading Blind Vision, an autobiography by James Pittar, a distance swimming athlete who swims with us occasionally. Oh and by the way he is very vision impaired (retinitis pigmentosa). Another busy Saturday!

Another walk around to Shelley today, more carnivals at Manly , people everywhere, surf skis and boards everywhere, tents everywhere, just a few swimmers and even less dogs.

Friday 24 January 2020 Monstrous surf

Beach closed because of massive swell and monstrous surf. i saw people running to the beach with boards under their arms before i saw it so I knew I would be going to Shelly.  Only the skilled set off from the beach today and it was good to see their skill

Thursday 23 January 2019: Oh dem waves

This morning's waves were a little challenging, some breaking before the point.  There was plenty of discussion about whether to swim from Manly, half way or Shelly.  Shelly seemed to be the commonsense approach.

Rainer chose to take the surfboard out.

While others chose still to go from Manly.

These guys are visiting from London and will swim with the group this week.

Still there were plenty of newbies.

Despite the conditions it is always great to get in the water and swim in Cabbage Tree Bay.

Due to the Manly Carnival being on Saturday 25th January, B&B will start the swim at Shelly Beach on that day at 7 am.

 

Do You Know Adam Graham?

Adam was born in Manly but currently is at school in England. He has swum with the Bold and Beautiful on several occasions when in Sydney on holiday. 
He is a very keen and dedicated swimmer who last year competed in the British Championships in Glasgow and won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle and a silver medal in the 200m backstroke in his age group. He just loves his swimming and always tries to beat the B&B ‘A’ Team on the return leg from Shelly !!
He also has quite a strong social conscience and has decided he wants to do something to help the bushfire cause from afar. So he has set himself the task of swimming 10km in under 3 hours and is aiming to raise $5000 for the bushfire appeal.
The swim is happening at his school pool at Millfield School in Somerset UK on 28 January.

22-01-2020: Walking on water

How did you begin your day? Louise, Monica, Jane (and 277 other B&B swimmers) started with an invigorating swim, relishing the salt air, sun, warm water and stopping on the way for a chat with a guy who looked like.... well..that he was just casually walking past..... not walking across the street...but walking across the ocean. He sure looked like he was walking on water!

On a killer day like today, (even if the water was a bit murky and you find seaweed hours later in parts of your body you didn't realise you had), a B&B morning swim sets you up for the day! You feel like you can take on the world. You feel like you can walk on water! Gaby was clearly loving her morning swim!

JK doesn't look like he is walking on water but does look like he's had a wax bust made of himself and released it into the water to float and bob across Cabbage Tree Bay! Say gidday if you see it floating past!

Another couple of floating busts otherwise known as Jane and Robbie. Jane is Robbie's mum. She has been wanting him to join her for a B&B swim for ages! Today was his first swim! Thanks for joining us Robbie. Great you saw fish even in murky conditions! Imagine what you can see when it's not murky! Hint hint! Come down again!

Head down, elbows up! These B&Bers are doing it right as they speed back to Manly....the smell of coffee from Kane and Annaliese's coffee 'hole in the wall' luring them back!

Speaking of Kane and Annaliese - they also sell delicious ginger bread men! Sorry for cutting half your head off in this photo Brad! Clearly your kids with their ginger bread men were the focus here!

Back on land and boys will be boys.

It's great to have management Ian and JK back - already busily signing in newbies and briefing them on the best swim in the universe.

21/01/2020 - Swimmers getting Smashed

...not getting smashed as in inebriated I hasten to add, (although I have got quite a collection of those photos ...!!)

Today it was one of those days the swim made you feel really ALIVE!!! Nothing like being hit by a sneaky wave, dumped in to seaweed and having a swim in a washing machine before you even get to the point!

Important announcement by manage as I arrived at the swim. On Saturday we will be starting from Shelly Beach as there is a Surf Carnival. Sunday is Australia Day so we'll gather on the beach to sing Advance Australia Fair before the swim so come early. Australia Day is usually the biggest swim of the year with up to 800 swimmers. The anniversary of my first swim 9 years ago too. Thank you Jules Mackin for introducing me to this amazing, incredible group. One of the most life-enhancing things I've ever done!

Long time swimmer Nicola is back swimming with us. She's had a hard time the last 2 months stuck in Bali waiting for her Aussie visa to come through;-) Judging by the eyes she may have had too many mushroom omelettes ;-) At last she has a 5 year visa and with her daughters both Aussie residents she's definitely here to stay!

We venture out trying to time our entry between the sets but as the following photos show a few of us got pounded!

It was a very bumpy ride to Shelly but well worth it. I didn't see any sea creatures today but concentrated on the swim for a change and loved it!

 Please Note - Manly SLS Carnival - Sat 25th Jan
Due to the Manly Carnival being on Saturday 25th January, B&B will start the swim at Shelly Beach on that day at 7 am.

Do You Know Adam Graham?
Adam was born in Manly but currently is at school in England. He has swum with the Bold and Beautiful on several occasions when in Sydney on holiday.
He is a very keen and dedicated swimmer who last year competed in the British Championships in Glasgow and won a gold medal in the 50m freestyle and a silver medal in the 200m backstroke in his age group. He just loves his swimming and always tries to beat the B&B ‘A’ Team on the return leg from Shelly !!
He also has quite a strong social conscience and has decided he wants to do something to help the bushfire cause from afar. So he has set himself the task of swimming 10km in under 3 hours and is aiming to raise $5000 for the bushfire appeal.
The swim is happening at his school pool at Millfield School in Somerset UK on 28 January.
