Thursday 31 October The Game Changers

It’s fair to say that all of us swimmers would like to swim faster or at least a little easier. We’ve tried talking about swimming, looking at swimming videos, even taking swimming lessons. Trying everything from a high elbow catch to kicking a bit faster. Well now there’s a way guaranteed to make all of us swim faster. It’s not about doing anything in the water, it’s about what you do on dry land. It’s about how you eat. It’s about being vegan. I know that’s a surprise. I was the last person from being vegan I can possibly imagine. But eight weeks ago I decided to go vegan, and I’ve had some very surprising results. I feel better, look healthier, and am much more emotionally balanced. But don’t take my word for it. The best athletes in the world are turning vegan. Wednesday 30 October 2019 Cough cough

Peering through the wall of smoke at Manly from the backburning being undertaken through Sydney locations to suffocate all those with respiratory weaknesses for many days in the year in exchange for a benefit which today is not apparent

Today we had swimmers Yannick and Helen who travelled from from New York to swim and catch some other Sydney highlights while they are here like a wedding. Tod who is a BB swimmer who brought them is not wearing stripes to distinguish himself - but he did not need to do that. he is already a distinguished swimmer

Head in the stars

I always feel like a star with my family and work colleagues when I mention (frequently and at great length) that I swim with the Bold and Beautiful. They think it is unbelievable and impressive. When people try it, they find that it is really addictive and every one of us can be an open water swimming addict. Also, it is so appealing to me that my mum is addicted to the TV show BB and I am addicted tot he swimming BB and here they collided with a visit by the cast to Shelly beach a while ago -

The ocean, the clouds, the landlocked lakes; they are all individual things, as abstractions. When we consider them an endless process they become whole. Even the water currently contained within you is part of the same process. As are all of the elements that flow in and out, supporting your animation.

We don’t pass through life as an individual thing. Life passes through us as an endless process.

Sunday 27 October: Super Sunday

This morning got off to a slow start. After a crazy week at work, and an eventful Saturday night at the Skiffy watching the rugby (go England!!), I wasn't too happy to hear my alarm go off. My mood changed though when I got down to the beach, which looked just stunning:

John and Ian had left Lower Lower Middle Management, Shaun, in charge. (When I get a moment I really must review the B&B delegations structure.) Shaun was doing a great job and had even waived the joining fee for today's newbies:

Shaun had also (allegedly) delivered the perfect water temperature, although John Bond suspected that there may have been just a little bit of doctoring going on. Well, we do live in the era of fake news:

Last night at the Skiff Club (go England!!) I met Pierre (below, second left, with Mike, Lainey and Fi). He told me about some of the marathon swims he's done: the English Channel and also the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Pierre practises Wim Hof breathing and sits in an ice bath twice a day:

Amazing stuff!! I will definitely do some research on that (just as soon as I've watched England beat the All Blacks again :) ).

Today's swim was eventful to say the least. Surf was up and the crowds were growing. The choice was there for people to enter via the surf at manly, halfway at high tide with a surf, or the bouncing waves at Shelley. This dog was watching his owners at Shelley, glad they'd taken the safe option.

Then there were the milestones achieved along the way of today, both Shelley Keeble and Sarah Proctor Abbott notched up 2000km today, celebrated with a tunnel. Sarah lives in Hong Kong for half the year so manages to accumulate her km's very quickly.

Temperature was 19.1 today, with 418 total swimmers including 8 new people.

Thursday 24 October 2019: Birthdays, milestones, warmer temps and rays

What a week its been with warmer waters, whales, grey nurses and fevers of rays but today everyone was asking "where's Shaun?"

You see lower middle management hadn't met their KPIs and so with Ian away and John busy with seminars this week, top management needed some woman power to crank things up for our swimmers.  With just one day left to deliver, I've ordered some nice warm weather for the rest of today and tomorrow, making a swim in Cabbage Tree Bay on Friday morning the best way to start your day.  I'm reassured that there will be plenty of sea life to look at tomorrow morning as well.  It's been a hectic week clearing the water filters, making sure the wave dampeners are working adequately, firing up the water heaters and ensuring the spectacular sea life know the importance of putting in an appearance this week for maximum crediblity. To be honest its been exhausting so after tomorrow I'm happily handing back the reigns to JK to keep everything in order.

But it seems the changes have come at a cost.  I became a little concerned when yesterday Shaun recounted his conversation with the albino wobby and it kind of went downhill from there. I'm worried he may not be feeling the B&B love so if you see our favourite builder muttering to himself, brown paper bag in one hand and his collection of accumulated swimwear in the other, please tell give him a cuddle, tell him we still love him and reassure him that next time he is given the opportunity to just try a little harder.

On a more serious note Roger Ingram today passed the 1000km mark - what an achievement.  He was greeted with the customary arch at the end of his double.

We also celebrated Gayle's birthday - it was actually her birthday on Sunday but she tried to keep it quiet - no such luck at B&B -  a birthday of such a celebrity generally means cake.

We're still looking for Shaun and his albino wobby.

The 6.30 crew were quite happy with management deliverables this week.

As were the earlier swimmers.

23/10/2019 - Izzy's Birthday Swim

Well it was Izzy's birthday today and the water warmed up to 19 degrees as a b'day treat. Photo above from last year as I missed Izzy in the water this morning but hear she did get in! 

Stunning sunrise above Shelly Beach at 6.03am and the air temp had warmed up to around 16 degrees.

Here's Izzy getting a hug from Anne who had kindly baked the most delicious gluten free orange/almond cake.

For those of you who don't know, Izzy has been swimming with The B&B since the second day it began back in 2008. She is an actress and voice coach who was Head of Voice at NIDA for 5 years and even taught Cate Blanchett. She has done a huge amount of theatre and TV and even wrote, directed and acted in Humphrey Bear! She acted in Z Cars (UK), Matlock Police, The Curiosity show, Division 4 amongst others and was one of the first pregnant women to appear on TV!

Earlier this year  she was in Europe assisting scientists to get the message across about climate change. She's just come back from a holiday in Kazakhstan though, where her son got married!

I didn't see the Grey Nurse sharks that a few of the (very) early swimmers saw or the fever of Cow Nose Rays that the doublers saw ... but did see this gorgeous Eagle Ray swimming along.

Roger, Sue, Janet and Gunnar. Between them this lot clocked up around 17 kms today. They weren't talking about tequila shots when they said they'd done 2 singles and a double (Roger and Sue) 1 single and a double (Gunnar) and a Triple (Janet)!!

 

A few of us attended the tasting of the Bold and Beautiful wines last night at The Surf Club.

It's a very small run with just 100 six packs available for purchase. Each six pack contains 3 bottles of the red (Shiraz Viognier) and 3 bottles of the white (Chardonnay).

The wines are made by James Becker, out of his vineyards in the Hunter Valley.  David Webster has been planning the grape varieties, the style of wines and helping James through the process of making, bottling and labelling the wines. To order or enquire email David on

22/10/19 Toasty Tuesday thanks to new management

 

Ian and JK have been usurped by a new solo management team. Our great leader Comrade Deanna today single-handedly raised the water temp to a toasty 18.4

 

The crowd were unanimously very happy with the appointment of our Dear Leader

 

Also brought to the ocean by Our Excellency were some whales, slapping their fins and playing just off the coast

 

Under this new reign, all swimmers are equally tough

 

We now have the bluest water in the world. Horizontal visibility was recorded this morning at 150metres.

Rich is always happy to give advice to fellow swimmers about their technique and what they can do to improve. He is especially knowledgeable about length of stroke and height of elbow having done theses on these at UNSWim

 

Court and Anna are back for the summer and are pleased at the changes that have taken place recently and look forward to their bright future.

The Next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 12th Novemober at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant. Our guest on the night will be Allan Sparkes CV, OAM, VA FRSN, who is one of only 5 Australians in the past 44 years to be awarded the Cross of Valour (CV), Australia's highest bravery decoration. Allan will speak about "What is the rarely recognised element of courage and why is it so important today?" Is courage about overcoming fear? willingness to risk your all, an inner strength? perhaps it is about choice, leaving a place of safety to go to a place of danger? But how often do we consider courage is about the willingness to care. In his talk Al Sparkes will touch on the times he has had to be courageous to help others and the times he stopped caring about himself. And what he did to recover his life from the pits of hell.
