Sunday 30 June: Happy EOSY

Big day down at the B&B this morning.  End of Financial Year (EOFY) excitement gripped the waiting swimmers.  They knew Management would be putting on their own show:  End of Swimming Year (EOSY) specials.  We weren't disappointed.  After almost two months of calm, clear water, a gnarly ocean awaited us:

Some swimmers opted for a pleasant stroll to halfway.  Leonie and Paul:

Wilf and Annie.  Annie had made it back to the beach just in time for EOSY, after a fantastic trip around eastern Europe.

The board looked promising:

Then things got serious:

JK announced the latest bargains at Warringah Mall and that, today only, everyone could get their blog photo taken for free.  He also mentioned something about sets coming in and that everyone should swim to their ability but by this time, frankly, no one was listening.  They'd heard about the free photos and weren't going to miss out:

Big news of the day: Julie (second from left) announced it was her birthday!  Happy Birthday, Julie!!

On the walkway I had a nice chat with Trevor.

Then I bumped into Emma (who'd just lost a tooth), Mia and Kathy, enjoying their breakfast.

The lovely Sparkles lit up the view at halfway.

The Potgieters know a bargain when they see one, so they'd selected the Family EOSY Package.  First Justus (with ring-in Polly):

JK did the "let's go" before someone pointed out it was Julie's birthday.  Ever the professional, he led the remaining swimmers in a round of "Happy Birthday" and then got Julie to do the all-important second "let's go":

After our customary stop for a chat at the toilet block (does everyone do that, or is it just us?), Rainer reminded me that, with just a few more photos today, he'd average one a day for the entire Swimming Year:

So I indulged him with one more shot before he headed into the surf zone:

Then I joined the action at halfway:

Regular blog tarts Belinda, Lisa and Robyn introduced Clare to the joys of blog-tarting:

Halfway was a good option if you went carefully and timed it with the waves:

Back at the beach, Errol and Rainer listened with interest as Jo, the B&B's (very unofficial) financial controller, calculated how many times during the last Swimming Year Rainer had failed to bring his KeepCup to the swim:

Peter joined in, and they all discussed how many of my neighbours' houses had been knocked down during this Swimming Year:

The answer is one.  Dear Readers, this has not been a peaceful weekend:

As the sun hit its stride I pondered how amazing it is that this wonderful activity is completely free:

Fantastic opportunity for a supportive B&B kayaker or two to join Chloe McCardel’s English Channel Swim Training Camp this weekend !!

Your role will be to support a great bunch of swimmers in beautiful Jervis Bay.
The swims will range from 1-7hrs, with a couple of hours in the dark. They will also have an IRB (ex-surf life saving IRB) as an added water safety feature.

Minimum paddling commitment is Sat 9am until Sun 11:30am (but, there is extra accommodation available pre & post-camp on THUR / FRI & SUN if you wish to stay extra nights)

Early morning call at the B&B corner, skies clear and sunrise slowly appearing.

Waves a bit churny at the point, currents here and there.

Chilly outside, ....the Drinks Express is ready to roll.

On the way in to the water I got an earworm, an old REM song started in my head.

Shiny Happy People buzzed with me all the way to Shelly.

On my return there are SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE everywhere getting ready for the 7am swim.

It is the best time to swim. Warm calm waters. Clear to see fishes. The winter solstice swim is over so no fears on that front. A badge to swim for and an excellent way to start the day

Thursday 27 June 2019: Back to beautiful sunrises and calm seas

It looks like the rain and waves are behind us now for a few weeks and its back to perfect sunrises and flat seas for our Bold and Beautiful morning swim.

The sunrises are creating some very picturesque shots as evidenced below with the 7amers coming back to shore.

This was a little earlier in the morning as the 7amers made their way into the water to the sun peaking through on the horizon.

Michelle and Martin are clocking up the swims for their winter badge.

As are these 6.30amers.

Heading out just before 7am were Fi, Kerry and the team.

One of the best parts of the morning is the pre-swim chat!!

Some of us do a little pre-swim exercise to warm up

What better way to celebrate buying a house than a morning swim in Cabbage Tree Bay.

Off we go at 7am.

Wednesday 26 June 2019 Set a goal. Make a plan. Achieve your goal

I got in an extra swim today because work permitted. I have set myself a goal of getting a www and winter badge. I am on my way to it. I am inspired by the weekend effort of Pierre Lord who completed a swim - the English Channel

The is a huge goal but it involved a huge amount of planning, training and preparation, as well as support of his family and friends. Nonetheless, it is a fabulous achievement and my whole family and I were watching his swim via the tracker of the board and were so pleased he did it! Not only was it his first crossing by swimming of the English Channel, he was the first solo crosser! Details:

24/06/19 - Comfort or Evolution.

Swim attendance was on the low side today…
Probably because getting down into the water this morning presented a modicum of discomfort.

Discomfort occurs when there is a change in your world; your external (or internal) environment. This morning it largely involved a ch, ch, change in temperature.

Once you adapted to that change, the discomfort was gone and you were feeling better for it. That ‘better feeling’ lasted long after the change in temperature had been forgotten. In fact, you’re still integrating the utilising the benefits you received...

Consider it like this:
Change (temperature) > Discomfort > Adaptation (growth) > Comfort at higher complexity (evolution).

Voluntarily placing ourselves in environments of discomfort not only increases our capacity to cope with unexpected changes, it allows our innate systems to refine and optimise their function.

Discomfort is an invitation for growth. Like any invitation, it’s a choice…
This morning’s swim was either cold, grey, rainy and best avoided. Or, it was an opportunity to evolve.

Winter swimming

The B&B Winter swimming season starts on 1st June. Although the water temperature may be a little colder than you might like, there are several advantages of swimming in winter, including flat seas, good visibility and no bluebottles. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that you can also qualify for a winter badge by swimming a minimum of 20 times between 1st June and 31st August. You must also swim in at least 7 different weeks. If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (Winter without wetsuit). Start now, and don’t forget to log your swims to qualify.

Please wear your best Christmas paraphernalia on the night. Theme and dress up your table for the chance to win a prize. It will be a fun night, so don't miss out!  First in best dressed... If everyone is very well behaved, we may get a visit from Santa himself. Who knows, if you are really good, Santa may even let you sit on his lap.

Enjoy a delicious steak or chicken dinner. A vegetarian option is also available on request, please tell us at the time of purchasing your table. Drinks will be available at bar prices. 

Lots of silent auction items will up for grabs, and there will be live auctions right through the night. We will also have a monster raffle which will be drawn at the conclusion of the evening. If you or someone you know would like to donate an auction item or a prize, either individual or for a table please let us know (email Ian at [email protected]). Funds raised will support both the Royal Far West and the B&B, two great causes.

To swim or not to swim.....

 

There was lots of chatter in the build up to the soltice swim today. People were asking on social media, should I or shouldn't I? How cold is it? Will people see me? What if there's surf? On and on it went. In the end it wasn't as difficult as some thought it would be and I think we all had a great time.

So many people turned up at 6.15am it was like a summer day, and very hard to capture the atmosphere in the brisk air with hands that don't want to operate as normal.

Each year it seems more and more swimmers are deciding to just walk in naked because the hassle of taking costumes on and off with flippers particularly is too hard a task. Never seen so many naked people at once on Manly Beach. It would have challenged Dark Mofo in Tasmania.

I honestly didn't know where to look and carrying a camera plus removing costume required skill. Hence I only made it halfway then came back.

Some of our swimmers went down to Tasmania for their naked swim, however it won't upload, maybe wrong format.

Winter swimming

The B&B Winter swimming season starts on 1st June. Although the water temperature may be a little colder than you might like, there are several advantages of swimming in winter, including flat seas, good visibility and no bluebottles. Perhaps the biggest advantage is that you can also qualify for a winter badge by swimming a minimum of 20 times between 1st June and 31st August. You must also swim in at least 7 different weeks. If you manage to do all of your qualifying swims without a wetsuit (or other thermal enhancing equipment), you will also qualify for the coveted WWW badge (Winter without wetsuit). Start now, and don’t forget to log your swims to qualify.

Friday 21 June 2019 And what is the temperature today?

Each morning I find myself asking about the actual temperature and then the 'how it feels' temperature. Fascinating conversation

Jet setters: One from Brisbane. One from Taiwan. 

Near the A Team tree. I think they have read the Far-A-way Tree book which tells us that if you stand near the A team tree you will go far faster. or something like that

This swimmer gets notifications from non swimmer friends of the temperature. If you don's swim you have a skewed idea of how nice it is to swim at this time of year. 

These guys never check the temp. They just come on down
