Like you, most mornings when I come down for a swim I’m not thinking about a big worm rising. So you can imagine my surprise when I heard about what the Spring Equinox Moon does to worms. It’s all about supermoons, and there have been a few recently. In January, we enjoyed the Super Wolf Blood Moon Eclipse. A special one because it was also a total lunar eclipse so we had a red rising moon. Then we had February’s Super Snow Moon.
But tonight we get the Spring Equinox Moon. This marks the point in Earth's year-long orbit of the Sun, when the Earth's axis is at a sideways angle to the Sun. It's also when the Sun rises due east and sets due west. Tonight, a pale orange moon will appear due east, and quickly become pale yellow.
But with all this talk about Moons what about the worm? So the Spring Equinox Moon coincides with the time of year when earthworms begin to emerge from the thawing soils in the Northern Hemisphere. So if you were in the US you could wake up watch the worms emerging. Now there’s lot’s of debate in the Southern Hemisphere about whether worms are more likely to emerge tomorrow morning. So as John Howard liked to say ‘Be alert but not alarmed.’ You may come down for a swim and see a sea of rising worms. And be careful if you are an early swimmer because you know what the early bird gets.
A total of 122 swimmers braved the 24 degree calm conditions this morning, including two lucky newbies. Here a selection of today's swimmers and the hotly contested selected cover shot.
And finally these were left in the ladies change room, you can collect them from John Kelly.
I'll see you in the water.
