Thursday 28th February Oceans of love...

American poet Sarah wrote “Because there's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away.” I like this idea of relentless love, and the assumption that there’s love in the ocean. That could be one reason why diving in each morning feels so special. Being in the ocean is like an embrace by mother nature, of an unremitting love. And every time we step out there’s a beckoning to come back and be reloved, again. This a beautiful idea and a reminder to me of how much genuine affection there is in our group of swimmers. There are of course the couples who swim together…

And the friends who swim together…

And the people like Bruce Baird who makes every morning at the swim just a but more special as he weaves his magic with us all. Happy birthday to the chair of the table of wisdom and knowledge…

27/02/2019 - A Fever of Rays and a Fever of Fionas :-)

What a wonderful swim it was today and... so exciting to see a fever of Cow Nose Rays back in the bay again! They've been visiting us for the last 3 or 4 years and they're an amazing sight as around 30 of them swim in formation! 

As well as a fever of rays we had a fever of Fionas! Here they all are...Fiona McTackett, Fiona Johnson, Fiona Dubrovnick and Fiona Logan, all radiant after their wonderful swim.

It really was one of those special mornings today... with the early morning light, bursts of sunshine, warm air and water temps and calmer seas full of fish...It was a top swim!

Made even the more special with the warmth and wit of Shelley and Ian pre-swim!

We had a few gentle waves but nothing like the rough seas at the weekend...

Thunderbird aka Michael. If you missed his Sunday blog a couple of weeks ago you really must go back and look at it. It was a work of art.

Gemma and Fi come out at 7 and go out again they loved it so much!

Over at Shelly I found Leisa with her son Ben who hasn't long been back from Barcelona. It's such a treat when our kids swim with us. (Please take note any children reading, it really makes your Mum's and Dad's day :-)

26/02/19 - A glassy change

What a mornin'! The water temperature was the warmest I have felt it this season - and ALMOST didn't have to slowly walk in, wincing as the water gets closer and closer to my belly button.. I am sure I am not the only one who starts the swim like this! The conditions were the glassiest in a while, a lovely change from the onshore bump and big swell over the weekend. There were whispers of some Dusky Whalers at the point from the earlier swimmers- but I am the last person that will spot anything swimming- did anyone manage to see them!?

A busy Saturday...

There's nothing better than the weather man getting it wrong. Initially the forecast was for big swells both today and tomorrow but the calm bay was a perfect welcome for everyone this morning. Some bumps in the bay and some waves but nothing like the forecast and we were all pleased.

This man was sitting on the wall of the ramp with a lady but she promptly ran from my camera, was a lovely moment to watch as they pondered their swim, now he looks alone but he's really not, polite enough to put up with my camera, thank you sir :

Lisa caught up with Gino and friends, he's getting married in 6 days and talking about the solstice swim already! 

Some sandbars still around, Kerry and Attracta caught waist deep while I was nearby ankle deep! Almost but not quite.

After bouncing over a few waves to get to the point, I found a nice view of the sun through clouds then Jenny and Paula before our swim

At Shelley there were a few people waiting to head back again, probably about 285 actually!

While long distance swimmers were finishing off their 6km swims and further the rest of us had our coffee's and breakfasts with the rain starting again. Alex P has a routine of stretches and movements post swim, here fiance Ali helps out with the more difficult ones:

There was a dusky about on Thursday, he was too deep for me to capture but Elaine bumped into him in the shallows of the scenic route :)

I snapped two of our older swimmers during the week while they chatted over coffee, so nice to see them when they're down at the swim.

Friday 22 February 2019 - Dangerous sea/see for yourself

The news reports made me wonder if the sea would be ok for me today to swim in But you should always have a look. The conditions depend on the orientation of the beach, where you get in and also your skill. I managed it ok today but only entering. Exiting at South Steyne was not for me

Danny reached 1000km today - I am told this is after 10 years. I did not have a boa so swimmers obliged.

DRUM LINES AT MANLY

SMART (Shark Management Alert in Real Time) drumlines will be trialled off Sydney beaches from Barrenjoey to Newport and from Dee Why to Manly as part of a three month trial.

From 10 February to 12 May 2019, 20 SMART drumlines will be trialled at Palm, Whale, Avalon, Bilgola, Newport, Manly, Queenscliff, Freshwater, Curl Curl and Dee Why beaches near existing shark nets.

This technology has achieved strong results on both the North and South Coast and will now be tested at some of the State’s most popular beaches. There is no intention to remove shark nets from Sydney, Wollongong or Newcastle beaches.

SMART drumlines allow contractors to humanely and safely catch sharks, tag them and then relocate them away from swimmers and surfers before releasing them. When a tagged shark is detected, the community is instantly alerted through the SharkSmart App and Twitter feeds.Watch the SMART drumline video

The drumlines will be set 500 metres offshore every morning (weather permitting) and collected at the end of each day. They consist of two buoys and a satellite-linked communications unit, which is attached to a hook baited with a single mullet.

DPI will host a series of community drop-in stands at trial beaches today and in the coming weeks to speak with locals about how SMART drumlines operate and share results from previous trials.

Thursday 21 February 2019: Happy birthday to one of our favourites

While the seas today were a little lumpy and there was a great rip by the surf club to make for a quick exit out of Manly, today we had other reasons to celebrate, the birthday of one of Bold and Beautiful's favourites.

Sophie bought down her beautiful family to celebrate and her son Jack even ventured out on his boogie board while Sophie swam with the 7 o'clockers to Shelly Beach.

One of the Bold and Beautiful's birthday celebrations is a bit of a splash from the crew at Shelly Beach and Sophie and Jack certainly got that.

There was plenty of discussion this morning pre swim about the weekend's pending surf.  It is likely to big so swimmers are reminded to swim within their ability and if it is rough there is no shame swimming from half way or Shelly Beach.

Another two of our favourites Annie and Edwina catching up pre swim.

There were some nice sets close to Manly which made for some great wave jumping shots.

The Gold and the Beautiful.

It was a drizzly start to the morning, traffic was slow and there was an air of 'lets just stay tucked up in bed' lingering! Apart from cars, very few people were out and about! Approaching the beach was quiet too and it felt like no-one was there for our swim - until I got beyond the tree - and voila! There they all were - keeping their hair dry under the eaves of the surf club.

 

'Not sure why they want to keep dry. They are going to be wet in a minute!' yell some who are boldly standing in the rain pre-swim and putting on  exceptional blog poses!

 

Inge is spotted keeping Champion warm and dry. Very thoughtful of her on this rainy overcast day! She insists she is just copying Shelly who, if you look closely, can be seen doing the same to her in the first photo!

 

Everyone is delighted at having the ramp back this morning! No trucks and construction blocking the way! Straight into the water as usual!

 

And they're off to Shelly!

 

According to some, a Wobbiegong and a Dusky were swimming in the shallows of Manly. Sadly I missed both but here is a lovely photo of seaweed for you. (its actually not even that lovely).

 

The swim is always excellent for meeting people and making new friends, irrespective of the inclement weather!

These guys didn't know each other before the blog photo but are best mates now!

Here is Lainey with Ali, out from Germany. On first glance I thought Ali was Lainey's daughter! Oops - sorry Lainey! They were great swimming buddies before Ali moved to Deutschland!  Thanks for visiting again, Ali!

 

 

While I was down the other end of Shelly (eastern suburbs) taking photos, Ian got everyone to sing happy birthday to Tim G! I missed the photo opp, Tim. So sorry. But here is a birthday cake for you. Hope you like chocolate.

 

Before you could say 'today is a miserable rainy day but boy we still love swimming with the BnB', everyone had taken off back to Manly except for these three who were having a rather lovely chat and were oblivious to the fact that they were the last man (and women) standing (floating) at Shelly.

They bid their farewells (great placement of hands Ian!) and off they scooted!

 

Something was amiss on the way back. There was tension in the water. Someone from the point had also sensed the tension. Something just wasn't quite right. The A Team were unnerved. They kept looking over their shoulders, in disbelief. Faster and faster and faster they swam, breathless, looking over their shoulders again and again.

A swimmer they didn't know, was encroaching on their space. Getting a little too close. Who could possibly keep up with them?

 

Oblivious to the stress she was causing the A Team, Shane Gould, Australian Gold medallist, Survivor survivor and all round legend, was just down at Manly having a swim with her sister! Please don't stress our A Team out again Shane. (Feel free to come down again tomorrow!!!!!)

 

There was a distressing sight on the way back into the beach! The swimmers were having to take the stairs again!

 

 

In the half an hour we were away, the trucks and construction had taken over the ramp again!

 

We weren't impressed but these construction guys thought it was funny!

 

But at the end of the day, we can't really complain. An awesome swim, good cold shower, a post swim hug, a coffee with Bindi the Kelpie, rain, hail or shine, is what life is all about!

In 2016, she wrote a story about the Bold and Beautiful swim club, which is where she met veteran B&B swimmer Wilf Deck, a former Opera House engineer with Arup’s who features in the book. Helen will talk about the book and will have copies for sale on the night.

The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). 19/2/19 - Bumpy Tuesdays with Babewatch

Hello again! This morning I arrived to a scene of confusion. It appears the work has begun on the stormwater pipe, cutting off the usual ramp access to start the swim.
This left everyone baffled. How do we get to the water!? I arrived approximately 7.01, normally running down to the water as people are normally at the point, to people standing around just looking at the ocean, with no means to enter.

 

Thankfully- It was pointed out, that there is a set of stairs to the left, that also take us down to the water. Of course!!

 

For those that dont like change, like me, I was slightly put off by this new start to the day, and i hope the pipe is renovated quickly to return back to the normal entry point.
The conditions were quite bumpy this morning, with the beach being closed, a bit of a change from the standard Tuesday glass. For this reason, not many marine life photos were taken, as I was too busy trying to stay afloat and make it in one piece to shelly.
This morning was the first time I was on time/fast enough to actually make it to Shelly before everyone started swimming back!

We are always the last to leave Shelly. Today it was because of Lex and Bronnie practicing some aqua aerobics. Very impressive..

 

This morning, Babewatch was very rainbow- and we had a large crew!
