30/01/19: And on the fourth day....they are gone!

A team of very happy B&Bers post swim today and sans blue bottle stings after a horrific day yesterday of bluey carnage and multiple casualties!

Janet's leg was covered in stings yesterday. They were so bad we had to blur the photo so not to frighten you. (Actually- there was water on the lens which ruined the otherwise perfect picture!)

Despite the continued nor' easterly today, the water was almost free of these nasty beach invaders.  'Why is this so'? We ask on behalf of Professor Sumner Miller, who I'm sure, had he still been alive, would have had the answer for us all by now. When no answer was forthcoming, next best option was to ask our John Lehman, conspiracy theorist and budding scientist.

'Well', said John, decked out in appropriate blue together with his blue wearing support team, Anne and Richard, 'this is what I have theorised after studying the beaches for the last four years.  On the first day of the nor' easterly, the blueys are being blown in from afar but don't quite reach the beach. On the second day of the nor' easterly, they appear in the water and on the beach. On the third day, they are here in force and being washed up on the beach. And on the fourth day - they are gone!' Seems to make sense to me. JK is warming to the idea though Ian is not so convinced. 

In the meantime, people were going about their business readying themselves for the swim including newbies Alaina and Michael from Hawaii who are here on a 12 month working holiday. This was their very first swim!

We managed to snap him anyway with Dorset and Ian! John, also decked out in blue, is trying to convince Ian of the merits of John Lehman's bluey theory!

JK summonses the masses and gives them the bluey 'all clear'........and off they go!

Except for Gemma .... who still thinks she is at the pub. 

Might be easier to put on that cap Michael if you got a little hair cut! (or even a substantial one!)

Considering most could not get even through the first two verses, maybe it is now time for our own B&B anthem.

An Extra Special Day

Today is an extra special day. 

January 26 marks the landing of the First Fleet, a convoy of 11 ships carrying convicts, at Port Jackson in 1788. This event represents the founding of the colony New South Wales. From 1946, January 26 was called Australia Day in all states and territories, and since 1994, the Australia Day public holiday has been on January 26 throughout the country.

Today was special to us in our little corner of the world for a few other reasons.

There's a big surf carnival at Manly today and we were asked to start and finish our swim at Shelley today. What a perfect day for it!

Today is also Lainey's 8th anniversary of swimming with the B&B and that's pretty special. You will know Lainey, she is a regular swimmer and runner and takes amazing underwater photos. Congrats Lainey and thanks for bringing the nutty seedy slice. It was delicious.

As if that is not enough to celebrate, Ian had something special up his sleeve. 2 special somethings, one for each arm.

Special Something No. 1

The Medibank free+active random swimmer of the month for January is Sue Marinan. Sue started swimming with B&B exactly 3 years ago today, and in that short period has swum more than 3000 km. She loves the cameraderie in the club and likes to constantly challenge herself to do as many kilometers as she can. She intends to use the $100 Rebel voucher to buy more swim gear.

Special Something No. 2

The Medibank free+active random Swimmer of the Year is Sterling Brain. Sterling started swimming about five and a half years ago and has clocked up more than 2500 km. He loves swimming with his mates most mornings and enjoys racing them back to Manly. He also like the after-swim exhilaration he feels, as well as a well-deserved coffee. With his six children to support, the $500 MasterCard voucher will come in very handy.

If you want to be in the running to win the swimmer of the year this year, all you need to do is to swim at least once in each month and log your swims.

There were scuba divers at the bottom of the bay today. But I found Antony's diving better. He told me that he has done the training as part of surfing. Surfing is amazing

In the constant quest for swimming improvement I attended a workshop which was otherwise attended by people seeking to improve their swim leg of triathlon events. Also I was the only one who was missing an aquarobics class to attend. It is so endlessly interesting to look at components of swim technique.

As usual, Australia Day, next Saturday, will be a huge event. Please note that, due to a surf carnival at Manly, B&B will be meeting and commencing the swim at Shelly Beach. Please do not swim from the beach at Manly. Try to arrive early, to allow time for parking and the walk to Shelly (for the safety of all swimmers, please don’t enter at half way). We also request that everyone wait on the beach to avoid congestion on the walkway. At 7 am we will gather together to sing the national anthem on the beach before we enter the water. This year will be even more special, as we will be announcing the Medicare Free+Active Random Swimmer of the Year, who will receive a $500 MasterCard voucher. The Random Swimmer of the Month will also be presented with a $100 Rebel voucher.

 

For safety reasons, we will be swimming in an anticlockwise direction around the Bay – swim from the right-hand side of the beach to the Point and return to Shelly Beach along the shore side. Please do not swim into the beach at Manly as there will be water craft accessing the beach in that area. Every year, we encourage swimmers to wear our national colours/flags or other paraphernalia. It should be an impressive sight. Come along and join in the fun.

 

Due to the large number of swimmers expected this weekend, we urge you to take particular care in the water. Remember, we are not racing; we are here to enjoy our swim. Please be mindful of our swimming etiquette and avoid swimming on top of other swimmers. If you do collide with someone else, please stop and make sure that they are not injured. Let’s make this a great weekend for all involved.

 

 

 

SUMMER SWIMS


10km swim 9 Feb 2019. 7am. Bring own food/water.

As the Summer long distance swimming season approaches, it seems appropriate to explain what it takes to earn a Summer badge. Three long distance swims are on offer:

• The 6 km swims are held every summer Saturday morning at 7am until Feb.
• There is a 10 km swim once a month over summer. Next one 9 Feb .
• If these swims are too long for you, you can try a Triple Manly to Shelly swim any day during Summer (distance 3.5 km) from 6.30or 7 am.

'Try a Triple'.  Do the Manly to Shelly return swim 3 times non-stop and earn a triple badge.

Please note, Badges will be awarded to swimmers completing any and/or all of the 3 swims at the times and dates stated above and throughout the Summer months. 

You will earn a badge if you complete these swims and log them in iLog. The system will only record authorised 6K or 10K swims that are logged on the appropriate days. Badges will be presented at the Summer Badge Ceremony in March. If you are unsure of the routes and protocols for these swims, please ask at the desk before you swim. When swimming these longer distances, we request that, for safety reasons, you stay with the group. We also request that you do not swim in dangerous conditions. The quest for a little cloth badge is not worth putting your life at risk. Enjoy your swimming.

 

Operation Crayweed Grass planting in Cabbage Tree Bay

If you are interested in supporting/assisting this initiative by way of signing up to be a CV (Citizen Volunteer) please read on.

The SIMS (Sydney Institute of Marine Science) Project Team expect to start the preparation work in late January and in February.

Assistance could take the form of on-land prepping as well as snorkeling assistance helping the netting get secured etc. SIMS/U.NSW do however have strict compliance paperwork to be prepared/signed off on before commencing such assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a CV to help the marine regeneration initiative could you please send your full name, mobile number and email to Dorset Sutton (Project Sponsor) at [email protected].

Dorset will forward you by email the paperwork required to be completed. At this stage actual prep/dive dates are not know, but we are interested in seeing how many potential CV's we'll have.

What I have been reading

I read a really positive review of a book Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens that was so positive I started the book. Won't be going with that site's recommendatios again - it is an ok book but falls so short of the gushing praise that it is disappointing me 

Delightfully clear!

What a stunner of a swim today was. As I stood at the point with JP assessing the scene , he found my choice of words quite amusing, straight to the title it went. Anything to bring a smile to someone's face. 

Even though the clouds were about, no jimbles or stingers, not a hint of a wave for the poor surfers out there. Perfect conditions for people to do their doubles and triples, and a lovely snorkel for me amongst the fish and rays. 

The yogis were deep in thought and action as I arrived early.

The early crew heading in , it was so quiet and peaceful today, nothing like our weekends at the moment.

Too many scenes today, I could have stayed for hours just absorbing the pleasant change.

22/01/2019 - 3000kms in 3 Years!

Call her brave, bold or bonkers but Sue Marinan achieved today what nobody else has achieved in the history of the B&B! After swimming around 6 kms most days when not injured or on holiday... she clocked up the phenomenal total of 3000 kms in only 3 years! This seriously determined, sexy Senior starts at 6.20am and just swims, swims and swims across our beautiful bay whatever the weather and often before a day of teaching. Well done Sue! Outstanding!

A few swimmers showed me a large Eagle Ray on the ocean floor just a few metres from Shelly. The water was clearer in patches today.

We've been swimming through schools of tiny fish lately. The silver/goldy ones are called Pomfred and stripey ones Mados.

I saw 3 Blind Sharks yesterday just before the Point. They are quite small and apparently so named because they close their eyes when caught by fishermen. I actually read there that they can live out of the water for up to 17 hours. That gives me hope that the one Sarah and I released after finding it stuck in a kid's Gumboot, may have actually lived!

22/01/19 - An Ace of a Swim

It was a beautiful morning for my first Tuesday blog! There was a clear sunrise, very little blueys, smooth conditions and perfect water temp.

There was lots of jelly blobbers this morning (the proper scientific name for them of course..), but apart from that, the water was a lovely 19.7 degrees and I'm sure I am not the only one happy the nor easters have settled! It was a great day to start your Bold and Beautiful journey- with 20 newbies thinking the same.

The 7am group racing back- there was even a SUP getting involved in this mornings beauty!

A few more younger faces this morning- The famous Murray and his brother Callum.

Andre was the most impressive bold and beautiful swimmer I chatted to this morning - He woke up at 5am, ran from Dee Why to Manly, did a double swim and then ran home at 7.45am! Here he is looking very happy, high on swimming and running endorphins!

IMPORTANT NOTICE - AUSTRALIA DAY
As usual, Australia Day, next Saturday, will be a huge event. Please note that, due to a surf carnival at Manly, B&B will be meeting and commencing the swim at Shelly Beach. Please do not swim from the beach at Manly. Try to arrive early, to allow time for parking and the walk to Shelly (for the safety of all swimmers, please don���t enter at half way). We also request that everyone wait on the beach to avoid congestion on the walkway. At 7 am we will gather together to sing the national anthem on the beach before we enter the water. This year will be even more special, as we will be announcing the Medicare Free+Active Random Swimmer of the Year, who will receive a $500 MasterCard voucher. The Random Swimmer of the Month for December will also be presented with a $100 Rebel voucher.

For safety reasons, we will be swimming in an anticlockwise direction around the Bay ��� swim from the right-hand side of the beach to the Point and return to Shelly Beach along the shore side. Please do not swim into the beach at Manly as there will be water craft accessing the beach in that area. Every year, we encourage swimmers to wear our national colours/flags or other paraphernalia. It should be an impressive sight. Come along and join in the fun.

Due to the large number of swimmers expected this weekend, we urge you to take particular care in the water. Remember, we are not racing; we are here to enjoy our swim. Please be mindful of our swimming etiquette and avoid swimming on top of other swimmers. If you do collide with someone else, please stop and make sure that they are not injured. Let���s make this a great weekend for all involved.

21/01/19 - Out and In, In and Out

Breathing. We are talking about breathing... Because it's important, it keeps you alive, but how often do you think about it?

Consider poor dolphins. They always have to think about their breathing, consciously ensuring their blowhole is above the water before they let themselves take a breath. Then what happens when they sleep? (...you should be wondering)

Well, they have this trick where they only ever let half their brain go to sleep. Their brain halves actually take turns at staying awake to make sure they can breathe. Cool, huh?

As land mammals, most of our daily breathing occurs automatically, so we take it for granted. That’s a shame, because with a little understanding and practice you can use conscious breathing techniques to literally ‘breathe life’ back into your… well… to ‘breathe life’ back into your life. We've known it for thousands  of years, and there's a heap of research on this now.

It's about 200-250 breaths from Manly Beach to Shelley Beach. Just like our friends the dolphins, when we are swimming, we are consciously involved in every single one of them.

This is undoubtedly one of the factors involved in that sense of expanded well being we gain from a decent ocean swim.

20/01/2019 - Carnival!

Manly Lifesaving Club is having its Carnival at South Steyne this morning, so our usual starting point was obstructed by feather boas and rhinestone bikinis..

380 Bold & Beautiful swimmers kindly accommodated the club festivities and flocked to Shelly Beach for a reversed course to the point and back.

Operation Crayweed Grass planting in Cabbage Tree Bay

If you are interested in supporting/assisting this initiative by way of signing up to be a CV (Citizen Volunteer) please read on.

The SIMS (Sydney Institute of Marine Science) Project Team expect to start the preparation work in late January and in February.

Assistance could take the form of on-land prepping as well as snorkeling assistance helping the netting get secured etc. SIMS/U.NSW do however have strict compliance paperwork to be prepared/signed off on before commencing such assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a CV to help the marine regeneration initiative could you please send your full name, mobile number and email to Dorset Sutton (Project Sponsor) at [email protected].

Dorset will forward you by email the paperwork required to be completed. At this stage actual prep/dive dates are not know, but we are interested in seeing how many potential CV's we'll have.

Forms will also be available at B&B Board each morning at our swim.  See Dorset at the swim.
