Water temp dropped back below 17 today and felt much colder.

The 6:30 crew hitting the water on a fairly overcast start to the day.

 Fortunately it had brightened up significantly by 7.

All is back to normal in WOW Land now that Queen WOW, Lisa is back in town.

Craig picking up a few last minute tips from Sterling as he tries to cement a position with the A Team.

Two up and coming Ethnographers, Hilary and Thalia from Sydney Uni.

They were conducting a few interviews this morning for an upcoming study of the B&B culture.

Could be very interesting as these smiling assassins dissect us.

Some other visitors today, these little purple jellyfish.

They seemed harmless but a few people came out with some nasty stings.



A lot of diversions in Manly today with the Manly Jazz Festival and markets.
In fact, our scheduled blogger (aka Mr Photobomb) was so distracted that he ended up on Magnetic Island instead of Cabbage Tree Bay unlike the 244 of us who enjoyed another magical swim.

29 september 2018, a great saturday

I swam a little early today as I had to come up to the mountains for the day. Its freezing up here in comparison to manly , air temp 11-12! 

My view as I walked from my car to manly 

I met a newbie called Barry from Melbourne who was keen to have a swim and see some marine life 

Lisa is back from Europe and excited to be in the ocean again . She got a lovely welcome back hug from Michael

Saturday always involves some mingling and chatting especially when early .

I love watching the paddlers in the water and doing their training on the beach. The scene as I enter before the early crew return 

I saw Penny Farrants in the water, always covered head to toe , she’ll never get a jimble sting for sure 

I had a lovely Port Jackson shark swim under me , beautiful little creature

The boards greet me on return with the lovely trees and club in view 

Ros and Sheena enjoyed the sun on the wall afterwards but I couldn’t get Ros to face me, she’s a shy one 

Steves at the markets today selling gelato, the jazz festival is on too . Head on down while the weathers beautiful

Friday 28 September 2018 Really feels like Spring

 The water is hotting up. the waves are moving about. It is getting to be Spring like. I wonder if there is a gauge of the understated old Australian way of describing the surf of our swim. "Manly Lake" for the flat conditions which suit me so well all the way through "bit bumpy" through "choppy" to the once in 100 years storm conditions "quite bumpy." The young speak a more global social media language and I do not have access to the way conditions would be described. Today was not flat and the waves were going here and there. It was of no use to time your entry because the waves were not regular, in my opinion. Having said that, usually when I do try to time the waves, i end up standing right at the impact zone. Unintentionally. There may be a use for my skill but I have not yet found it.

I have not even finished my pre swim photos and these two have completed their swim, got dressed and are now drinking coffee!  Impressive

Richard with the bike crown is here from Melbourne for his second swim. I think the commute will be too hard and he will move here even though Melbourne number plates say "Victoria: the place to be"

What I have been reading

 

Fatherhood by William McInnes. it had some really lovely bits in it that I could relate to and I generally enjoyed it. Especially the stories about his youth which was roughly the same time I was growing up in Australia. the funniest story was about his trip with a friend to go orienteering with the friend's father and being told not to touch his scroggin when he did not know what scroggin was. The description of the people who went orienteering with their hiking clothes and hats was pretty spot on and charming

Thursday 27 September 2018: Whales for Elizabeth's birthday and no cutting corners for the A-team

What a glorious morning after yesterday's wild conditions, perfect for a swim from Manly to Shelly Beach and back.  The 6.30am team (above) loved the smaller waves and warmer conditions.

Our eyes were deceiving us for some a few minutes, no there hadn't been a sudden massive drop in temperature - John Bond fixed that with the correct temperature 17.3 degrees.

The yogi's love their Thursday morning catch of sun rays before the swim.

And there was plenty of whale watching, with a number of humpbacks breaching and slapping their fins in the distance.

This little fellow has his own instagram account - no not JP - the gingerbread man. Every day JP (who is actually not on social media) takes a photo of the little fellow before eating him and then going for a swim.

He's getting quite a following - apparently he's viral, talking about the simple things in life that make us happy.

Elizabeth Stewart makes us all happy, today is her birthday, so if you see her around make sure you wish her many happy returns.

Ian is on his annual pilgrimage to Victoria tasting craft beer while John is headed to Oktoberfest and taking in a few English Football games - we need to teach him that AFL is a much better game to invest your time in.

Monica and Rosemary are looking forward to the return of the WOW's leader Lisa - who is winging her way back to Manly as we speak.  It seems most of the WOW's have made a winter trek to Europe chasing the warmth.  But if you see in the background they have missed out on everything spectacular that Manly has to offer.

Another one just back from overseas is Michelle while Annie will soon wing her way to Goa in India, along with several other B&Bers.

 

The "not so A-team" cut things a little to fine and close to the rocks this morning. Usually they are dominant in the water and are the first ones back from Shelly but perhaps they should look where they are going, particularly around the rocks.

You can count .......on the beauty

Yesterday, someone who lives dangerously close to me was waxing lyrical, as he does, about this and that,  when he said something interesting. He commented "it is amazing that rain or shine, cold or warm you can always count on the B&B. There are so many things we can't count on anymore. But arrive at Manly don a pink cap and you will find someone is always there to swim with, have a laugh or a chat."  It made me think about what you can and can't count on these days.

 

So I think you can't count on .......

1. having the same Prime Minister today as you did yesterday
2. eating a strawberry - as an 'all ages' activity 
3. that house prices will go up forever
4. that your job will exist in 5 or 10 years
5. interest rates will stay low forever
6. that the US President won't make the UN laugh 
7. that grammar will continue to used in the art of writing
8. the temperature being this or that at this time of the year
9. the Duskies - where the hell are they ?
10. that lists will be interesting

You can count on ......Drinkie to be a fearless leader or pose like one !!

Things you can count on

1. the Bold and the Beautiful will swim at 7.00am, 365 Days a year
2. the Drink Express will swim at 6.35am 365 Days a year
3. Cabbage Tree Bay will be beautiful and different, 365 Days a year
4. there will be people SMILING at the B&B every day, week in, week out, year in year out 
5. Roger will make you laugh by saying something ironic, insightful, sarcastic, amusing or a bit nutty
6. Ian & John or Ian or John will be there to greet you with a smile, a nod or an eye roll, day dependent
7. that the traffic will be eerily quiet on a Friday morning 
8. there will be a lot to say about the water temperature, clarity, waves or otherwise blather about swim styles or ailments

Today was a surprisingly lovely swim, water, the skies are gray, moody and the rain came down. It was beautiful and the water temperature is on the way up. You can count on the weather to change and change again, Jenny commented "felt like 15 on the way in and 22 on the way out'.... ain't it true, you can count on Jen for wise words.

You can count .....on these beauties to keep you company, make you laugh and splash a smile at a camera (any camera!)

24/09/18 - Ripples of Consciousness

We used to believe the brain, that pink capped bit you see bobbing above the water out at The Point, was the seat of consciousness...

It now appears more true that what's going on below the water counts for more... That consciousness originates in the body, and the brain is a merely a servant, responsible for adding a garnish of richness.

Our experience of self and the world emerges from body-brain interactions occurring in the brain stem, at the level of the water's surface. Here our hopes, our fears, our losses and joys are expressed as ripples in space and time.

Next time you’re waiting at The Point, take a look at all the pink caps, consider how much more is going on below the surface and watch as the ripples expand out from each individual to intermingle in our shared ocean of reality.

At Shelley I had a grand idea of picking a theme for today but forgot to take any photos of the people I asked. Alison and Amanda mentioned swimming, family and the environment. Suzette echoed the sentiment but also said she thought a meaningful life was important. The 2 A teamers I asked nominated winning and the BBQ. I did manage to get a photo of Caroline who also said relationships and family were important to her as well as swimming in our precious protected Bay - the common denominator for all of us.

What am I listening to?

Well, Internal Talk Like A Pirate Day came and went with nary a snifter of rum from the B&B. But I have been listening to 2 fabulous compilations -  Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys and  Son Of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys.  Both well worth a listen with artists like Baby Gramps, Iggy Pop, Shane MacGowan,  Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Kate McGarrigle, Rufus Wainwrigt to name but a few. The first album contains a song about a very notorious Good Ship but as this is a family friendly blog I'll leave it for you to find it.

With our Greg and Sue Marinan in Italy and Michele Franks at Niagara Falls and elsewhere, we had swimmers from Boston (Natalie), France (Emanual), London ( Jamie) and Gustav from Switzerland. Makes me remember that it is one world we all live in and what a great place it is so we should look after it so we can enjoy it and so that future people can too.  Here  is Andy all the way from Curl Curl, a regular swimmer

Monthly Dinner – 9^th October - With our own Radio Show Hostess..

The next B&B monthly dinner for the year will be held on Tuesday 9th October at 6.30 pm at Bluewater Restaurant, and will feature a very different format than normal. Our guest on the night will be one of our swimmers, Karen Sander, who is the creator of the radio program Ageing Fearlessly. Karen will host a Parkinson style show where she will interview three guests. The identity of the guests is being kept under wraps and will only be revealed at the dinner. The one thing that she will let you know is the guests fall into the following categories:

1. A household name
2. A mystery guest
3. A Bold and Beautiful Immortal

Please book early for this event as it is sure to be popular. The cost of the dinner is great value at only $25 a head, which includes shared entrees, and a selection of mains to choose from (including a vegetarian option). Glasses of beer or wine and desserts are also available at the special price of only $5 each. What I have been reading

The Story of a Marriage by Andrew Sean Greer which is going ok so far. I picked it because I liked very much the book "Less" that he wrote.
