With the fading S/E swell falling daily to a low of centimetres by Saturday and the dominant west south westerly's, we can expect a week of primo conditions for all. I would expect to see the water clarity slowly improve through the week as well, as the swell motion dies to a whimper. While the whiteboard says 18.2, my internal gauge says 20 but it was probably the chilly air that has us confused. Whatever the case it was really nice and worth a visit if you can fit it in this week. (PS See the notes on the Shark encounter at the end)
Its often hard to put in words the feelings efused by the fellowship of the swim, but one happy punter this morning in a leap of spontaneous joy helped spread the message.
For those that missed the board.
I felt a sudden creative flush come over me and I rolled the dial to timeless to see what happened.
On the way over a high speed shuttlefish sped past trying in vain to evade the paparazzi.
And a little further along just near Ed's rocks, a meeting of the Mens Thinktank, solving the worlds problems one at a time.
And on zooming behind the gathering I spotted a one man yoga class in a great spot for some morning rays.
And the image that is likely burnt into most of our subconsciouses. The underarm view.
And with that, time to get back to work.
All the best for the week and don't forget if you are coming to Julia's talk tonight and are likely to want a copy of her book, could you try and bring CASH please as it will make it much easier to manage.
She is offering a hard copy at a B&B discount of $30 and a soft copy at $20. Nice round figures and hopefully no change required.
And in late news from a boulder swimmer this morning (Berhard Kall), an encounter with a shark which you may like to read and consider options on before your next boulder encounter.
Hi Brian,
Bernhard ([email protected]) has left you a comment:
Frightening encounter with a shark on our way back from Queenscliff, around 100m from the Bolderdash turnaround point. I first spotted the shark, around 3m long and of grey/white colour, when it swam underneath me (water being quite deep in this area). From the colour I could tell it wasn't a dolphin or a seal. A couple of seconds later - I had lost sight of the shark in the meantime - I saw a fin sticking out of the water on my left side moving parallel with me heading south, in about 10 meters distance. That was the moment I got really terrified, and I started calling for Gunnar who was swimming a couple of body lengths ahead of me and further to the shore. Gunnar finally noticed my yelling, I screamed "shark" and lets swim back to shore. We immediately turned and headed for the beach which was about 300m away. I was so m uch panicking that I couldn't properly swim, but more dog paddeling, and every 2 - 3 strokes turning my head around to check whether the shark was following us. We eventually caught up with the surfers - quite a lot of them because of the good surfing conditions, told them about the shark, and we all made it back together to the beach safely. Needless to mention that my whole body was shaking when we arrived back on safe ground. Gunnar and I then walked back to the our Surf Club, conversing in a more philosophical way about who of the two of us was the luckier one - me having seen the shark and sh... in my pants, or Gunnar having been spared of that experience. Just on a sidenote, as the icing on the cake, we saw a couple of dead bluebottles at the beach around the North Steyn Surf Club. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN YOU PLAN TO DO A BOLDERDASH IN THE COMING DAYS, DO MOT SWIM IN A BLACK WETSUIT, OR BETTER DO NOT SWIM AT ALL TO QUEENSCLIFF. I will definitively stick to swimming in CTB for the remainder of the year.
Cheers
Brian
