Sunday, 29th April 2018 - We're Back!!!

Typepad is back up. We've successfully repelled yesterday's onslaught of Russian bots and state-sponsored North Korean cybercriminals. The Bold & Beautiful blog will not be silenced.

A total of 194* good looking swimmers enjoyed the continued run of balmy water temperatures. We're still sitting pretty at 21 degrees!

Friday 27 April 2018 YTWL

I know what you are thinking - what is YTWL? is it an up to date abbreviation used by all the youth that your blogger will reveal? No.

It is a good stretch sequence (says google).

One of the most important things about B.B. is swimming. I am  on a quest to improve my swimming. This week I learned that flexibility in the shoulders is important and found the ytwl stretches. 

I have been doing them for a day and was looking for some improvement today. I did not ask Garmin because sometimes I feel really powerful and fast and Garmin says no.

Other swimmers already do their own stretches because they knew without being told by google. Each at our own pace. 

 

 It was cloudy today but warm in the water. The trick to autumn/winter swimming  is not to get too warm on your way to Manly otherwise the contrast with the water is too great. Today it was a toasty 21

I finished The Circle by Dave Eggers which was very affecting. Made me think twice about the information that I make available about myself on social media. This week I am reading The Burning Room by Michael Connelly. Pretty great

Thursday 26th April Just everyday magic

So, we had one of our biggest swims yesterday and rightly so as we commemorate ANZAC Day. We had singing and trumpet playing and speeches. But as much as I love the big days I confess I enjoy little every days better.  For some things bigger isn't always better. I like the little every days with their everyday magic.

Back into the everyday magic of everyday friends. They’re not just there on the big days they are there every day.

25/04/2018 - Lest We Forget...

Over 800 Bold and Beautiful swimmers experienced a beautiful and moving Anzac Day service this morning down on the beach in our favourite corner of the world, before a gorgeous swim...

The sky put on a special display for us. The sun tried hard to squeeze through clouds, we even had a bit of rain, adding to the majestic grandeur of this special Anzac Day morning when we reflect and remember those who gave their lives for our freedom...

 Even Turbo arrived in his camouflage jacket to respect those who fought and served their country in war ;-)

Thank you to the B&B volunteers who made the pre-swim service so special this morning. Bruce, Lee, Claudia and Dorset spoke beautifully...

In the absence of Greg McDonaugh, Joe played The Last Post on his trumpet. It sounded wonderful and hundreds listened respectfully on the sand...

Ian told us there wouldn't be any waiting at the point today, it was straight to Shelly. The water is still warm at 20.9 degrees!

Ian counted 810 swimmers but admits he missed quite a few. I thought there were more swimmers than ever today so it could be a record!

A joyous bunch wait for the 'Let's Go' which didn't quite happen as a few impatient people set off before the call and everyone followed :-(

We do like to wait for the last swimmers so there will be no collisions

It was a morning when lots of people brought their children or family along. Paula has company today!

On the swim back Nat and Fiona bump in to each other. Fiona worked hard this morning signing in the 55 new swimmers and came across the bay last to check everyone was Ok. Thanks Fiona and all the other B&B volunteers that made it such an awesome morning for so many.

Such a beautiful light and sky as we swam back.

Here is Simon with his daughter Lola who only swim October - April he told me. Winter swimming is the best folks, they are missing out!

and back at the wall the 'Wows' have baked Anzac biscuits and Di her delicious South African 'Crunch'. Thanks ladies :-)

I'm sure most of us did reflect on  the bravery, comradeship, tenacity, strength and mateship shared by those who have fought for their country, as they swam today. We can't begin to imagine the hardships they must have endured but we thank them and revere them today.

 This morning, air temp 15.2 while the water was a balmy 20.8.

 The Men Of The Sea - mythical creatures who live on land and sea, otherwise known as Murray, Ravi & Brent were pumped for a 6:30 start.

Ange and Andy, a formidable couple were also eager to hit the water.

 

Meanwhile, John, Carl and Jonesy were just happily amusing themselves.

If you would like to continue this frivolity and get to know some of your fellow swimmers a little better, there is now a BnB Happy Hour on Friday evenings from 5-7 at  "North on North Steyne" at Lev 1, 49-53 N Steyne, Manly.

Everyone, even your non-BnB friends are more than welcome.  

Last Friday was the first time and we had over 40 people turn up.

Southerly swells, cloudy sunrise and a wedding

Ian and Pauline are back! Hope you had a wonderful holiday.

I didn't see Pauline today but here is Ian looking refreshed and Annie looking gorgeous. Annie is getting married later today - congrats, hope everything went well

This is a blog of few words. The blog product was down this afternoon and I posted on the FB page during the outage

I love the moody ambience of cloudy mornings where everything is still.

I started with Edwina in between the 6:30 and 7am peak traffic times and was fortunate to be able to relish the stillness.

20 April 2018 Life be in it

I recall a campaign from my youth called Life. Be in it. which featured an animated guy called Norm who got up from in front of the Tv and undertook some activity. It was a public health campaign to encourage movement. It was really effective. We need it again. After the 1950s Olympics in Victoria, there were Olympic size pools built all around NSW for people to enjoy. Lots are being knocked down for leisure centres now and we are too soft to swim out of doors (gasp). After the recent Commonwealth Games it made me think thee is a big focus on medal tally and not participation. Why do anything unless you are going to win?! That question is rhetorical for BB swimmers.

Part of the positive experience of swimming with BB is that you see the horizon, nature and lots of people out exercising and enjoying life. I am an aspirational swimmer only but a true participant. Lots of people know the secret at BB.
