To follow on with my last blog, “Ferox et decorus consilium” which was meant to mean ‘Bold and Beautiful Resolutions’, I wanted to see how well people were doing so far.
Many were already trying to uphold a particular virtue to keep them on the right path – although some of these do not appear in the long list from King Jim’s so I thought I would include them here – it is Sunday after all.
First off the block was Diligence – especially in the offering of instructions, very important to ensure one’s will is carried out...
This was best displayed by Ian and JK:
And part of Diligence is Preparation, which B&B's own Vin Diesel took very seriously.
Charity has always been an important virtue for Pauline…
And cleanliness – “all 2nd hand Speedos were washed before resold.”
Angus, who was reduced to using a handkerchief to cover up our imaginations, was in desperate need of charity in the form of a towel, blanket, shower curtain, table cloth or doormat…
He alleges he was 1 inches away from showing us Readers what he really thought.
Tartarism is not the French art of cooking meat for 1 second at room temperature, but it is actually the virtue of getting in as many blog photos as possible, which some have succeeded at since January 1:
These three insisted their virtue was ‘humbleness’ – the self-deprecating sister of ‘modestness’
But even a stunner like Winston Churchill could not, in relation to these girls, utter those famous lines “they have a lot to be modest about”.
These cats had me believe that moderation is a key virtue and they repeated it a number of times,
Everything in moderation
Especially moderation!
Ross, Kate and Tom showed me that imitation is a virtue and the highest form of flattery
I am still yet to find out who was flattering who.
I asked for her virtue while she was picking up a new cap due to hers ripping, and she swiftly replied, Discipline
Note: The cap did not rip during an act of discipline.
The poor nippers unwillingly took on discipline as a virtue as well.
Note: Smiling is not considered a virtue in Nippers.
Inga said that while best laid plans are important, mice and men alike must also take on flexibility.
In unison this mob sang out their virtue - Family First
Note: This should not be confused with support of any political party.
Peter, Dave, Ewen and Gregg told me that their virtue for the year was abstinence.
Upon hearing, Lisa and Jess' virtue was gratitude.
I also wanted to know more about our 6:30 crew
But could only catch them after their swim.
Unsurprisingly they all lived by the same virtue – punctuality.
As anyone who has ever been up at 2 a.m. to read my blogs will know, I struggle with punctuality and like many bloggers, feel bad when I publish it late.
But Rich cheered me up and put a smile on my face with a great saying…
‘Punctuality is but a virtue of the Bored’.
Thanks for the support Rich!
Murray said he shares the same virtues as Jim Morrison
I’d love to know what they consist of.
I also want to recognise Tom here, who has driven all the way from Alexandria twice this week to join this beautiful, welcoming community for a swim.
I asked him what was the driving force behind this dedication and how he managed to wake up by 5:30 to make the swim – he responded by simply quoting Jackson Browne’s The Pretender:
When the morning light comes streaming in
I’ll get up and do it again
I’ll get it up again
Thanks for the great advice Tom!
So there you have it, some virtues that some of us (including yours truly) may wish to take on this week or just for the next hour or two.
Unlike Michael and Emma who were resolute that in their experience, virtues are overrated!
Also good advice!
Oh and there was also a swim today with 390 swimmers, 22.2 degrees and 22 newbies but sadly Ritchie Benaud was not present to announce these stats.
All the best for a good week ahead and for the first time ever I can say “Enjoy the 10 left hours left of your Sunday!”
Gino
p.s. 10KM swim most likely being held on Saturday Feb 11.
(Not that I'll be doing it)
Special dates
- February 5th– Cole Classic – we will expect to start once again from Shelly and return there.
- Manly LSC have asked forvolunteers from B&B to assist on the Cole Classic swim. They are looking for help from individuals or groups who can assist with things like the BBQ, merchandising, booking people in, helping with storage of clothing etc. If you would like to help with or without friends please send an email to volunteer@manlylsc.com or talk to management and we can point you in the right direction. Please help if you can as they appreciated the assistance given last year and we would like to support the club.
Being a volunteer is bound to make you happy. DO IT!
Pacific Jules Swim coach
Join Pacific Jules coach Sarah Anne for an hour in the ocean and learn to swim with less fight and more speed! This series of workshops will teach you key essential skills ensuring your stroke is efficient, powerful, fluid, and fast!
- Propulsion and Power – Saturday 11 March 9-10am
There are some key areas for power in your stroke, but they may not be where you think! Many swimmers use their arms and legs incorrectly when swimming, chewing up energy and causing unnecessary splash and resistance. Swimming should be a whole body experience, timing is everything, and you need to ensure you are working with the water and not against it. The H2O will always win!
- Breath Easy- Saturday 6 May 9-10am
One of the most common issues we here from swimmers is around breathing. But, there are some key elements to your body alignment, position, and breath management that need to be in place before you even think about turning your head towards the air. Join us for an hour in the water where we focus purely on the essentials skills for breathing with more ease, and flow.
- Open Water Specifics – Saturday 8 July 9-10am
This is a high energy session for the end of our series! Adapting your stroke for open water is essential if you want to swim in the ocean, or compete in swimming events. Learn some key changes that need to be in place, how to sight, how to enter and exit the water, buoy turns, and how to conserve energy in the swim by utilising those around you!
What to bring: swim suit, cap, goggles, wetsuit, water and money for a hot cuppa afterwards!
Cost = $25 per workshop
Limited to just 10 people so please book in early to avoid disappointment.
Please email Sarah Anne directly to book on info@pacificjules.com.au or call 0420 923 067 for more info.
