How beautiful is this Indian summer, everyone? It's been six weeks since my last swim, but the water is still blissfully warm.
A big thank you to Lainey for this simply stunning shot she took before the swim this morning. When I grow up and win the Lotto, I want to wake up to this view every day:
Despite the slightly overcast morning, it was still an amazing 21.5C in the water:
The wonderful Ian welcoming the never-ending stream of newbies, including Sarah:
Newbies Sarah and her friend Flick:
Bright smiley newbie Megan :
.....who wins the prize for the best accessorising for today's swim:
The ever-patient Juno rounding up the swimmers...which included a purposeful Michael:
....who was meeting the ridiculously cheerful John & Leisa (who always gets my vote for best-dressed-of-the-day):
Another happy newbie, originally from Sth Africa...:
Look out, Sterling & JP! In your absence, Dreamy Dave is replacing the A-Team with his new Dream Team of handsome lads - James & Jacques:
A quiet moment of father-daughter pre-swim contemplation:
The camera-shy Natalie letting her father Richard reluctantly take the spotlight:
Even on an overcast morning, the sunrise was breath-taking:
And thanks to Lainey, here are some pix from the swim. Can you spot yourself?:
I've been coming to the B&B for a couple of years now, but it still feels as fun, refreshing and supportive as the first time. The tangible sense of community is what - quite literally - keeps me afloat. Two very small personal moments summed up the B&B for me today...:
Despite being a pretty strong swimmer, on the way back from Shelly I felt dizzy and had to stop and catch my breath for a few minutes just off the Point. Within seconds another swimmer stopped to check on me and make sure I was OK. Then, on my way in through the waves, I lost my fabulous new B&B cap....just to find it being scooped up and returned to me by the lovely Jacqui. Small - but important - moments in the life of the Bold & Beautiful.
Thank you Jacqui, thank you to that anonymous swimmer off the Point, and thank you to all the regulars and newbies who make this swim what it is. It's such a pleasure to swim with you all.
Have a fabulous Saturday, beautiful people!
Smiley Mary x

Here is a rare shot from inside the womens change rooms. I learned from Bianca and Midge that there were rogue waves. Good to know. Also Bianca is going to Byron Bay for an ocean swim. Good luck.
I love going in ocean swims as there is an opportunity to swim in a new beach with water safety nearby. Very enjoyable. Check out the oceanswims.com website for swims coming up.
I love the light at this time of year and the long shadows.

Phew. I go through the waves. Woo-hoo and yay. I could not have faced that 2 years ago at all.
At Shell Beach. To adapt Garrison Keillor's observations about the good folk of Lake Woebegone, I observe that ocean swimmers are all above average in looks and conversation. If you speak to other people, they are not endlessly interested in conditions and swim technique. So limited. I can speak for hours about my patient forearms. Here are some of the good looking ocean swimmers I found at Shelly
The A team visited the Eastern suburbs of Shelly
Sam made it to Shelly more easily than me!
Jen (rash vest) and James (on the right) are newbies in amongst the veterans
These floating devices make the swimmer easier to see.
The lovely people of the main part of Shelly, near the Let's Go. My favourite swimming companion, Gayle, Leslie, Sarah (who used to swim at my speed - what happened?) and the delightful Rainer, well known dad of Eva
What!? A blog tart in red speedos
John and John - who is relatively new. He found BB by google
Rick and Lisa enjoying the scenic route
Rick and Lisa with Sylvia. Half way had no sand and lots of rocks.
What I have been reading: a very stressful week so I have been reading a PD James, The Black Tower, like ice cream for reading enjoyment. We have also been watching season 3 of The Bridge on dvd. I like it so far.
This weekend there is a film festival on cross country skiiing called Back Country which we will go see - at that well known snow spot, Kirribilli.
Exciting news - the Newcastle Theatre Company is doing a play of Robert Gott's book, Good Murder. It is in in June. Should be great. According to Radio national, with the gentrification of Surry Hills and Glebe, young artistes are popping up in new places and Newcastle has lots to offer.

It really was a stunning morning and conditions were perfect for a lovely swim.
The sunrise was truly beautiful.
It was a great morning to do some yoga on the beach.
Or go in for a dip
I think it was such a lovely morning that people were more enthusiastic than usual when it came to blog tarting.
Just to confirm, I encourage blog tarting. I will always try to feature a good photo of anyone blog tarting / posing with great enthusiasm when I'm writing the blog.
Shelley and Lucy, you set a great example.
Alex, you did a pretty good job of blog tarting this morning.
Rusty, you're enthusiasm is appreciated.
Annie, you're up there with the best.
But this morning's prize for best blog tart must go to Lips.
Lips' enthusiasm is contagious, I really like how he inspired those around him to also tart it up for the blog, thank you!
I also love taking photos of lovely friends hanging out together, like Sophie and Annie.

Gorgeous blue skies, warm water for April and friendly faces for our daily ritual - glorious!
Like most mornings over the last few months, whilst waiting at 'the point' for "Let's Go", I look out to see the array of swimmers spread across the bay. Often many are so far across, they are nearly at Shelly!
So it got me thinking. We swim to 'the point', to wait at 'the point', then past 'the point' and back to 'the point', so...... "where exactly is the point"?
6am - 'the point' is somewhere out there.
6.20am - the boardriders head out past 'the point'
So....I asked the 6.30 crew Sarg and Greg (Sarg was too 'shy' to be photographed) - "where is the point?"
The answer: 1) opposite the telegraph pole but where you can't see the Surf Club 2) where the Sarg says 'the point' is
I then asked Issy, who just pointed to the point and said "out there", but where?
So then I asked birthday boy Stephen (pictured here with John from Melb), who said "it's out there!".
Happy birthday Stephen, I hope you make the point of having a fabulous day!
I then asked Shawn who had done a very early swim.
He pointed out that the 'rules' state that "the point is where you can still see the Surf Club and that management have final say".
I asked the 6am booty campers.
They wanted to make the point that 'the point' is a point where you all come together as a community!
I even asked the dog. He just turned and looked out to 'the point'. So what was the point of asking him??
So still confused I went to ask some 'sensible people'.
This is the WOW group - the Woman of the Wall group (ok, there are a few honorary blokes in there too)
"At the back of where everyone stops, so I don't get swum over", "out there and turn right" and "where everyone waits, often half way to Shelly" were among the answers.
Still no consensus, so let me ask David P aka'Mr Perfect'. Surely he knows.
"It's out there, off the rocks where you can just see the Surf Club"
I feel I am getting closer to resolving this.......
Let's find some people that look like they have been doing this for a long time.
"It's out there, where you can see the clock on the club house" said Ian F.
Today was a 'high point' for Ian Forster in hitting 2,000km today - great achievement Ian, well done!
Finally I spoke to JK, aficionado of Let's Go and he said, "The point of the point is it's about safety and social. Keeping us together as one group, just like when it started, social and for safety"
So there you have it ladies and gents. What's the point? The point is....the point is.....it's about social and safety. Keeping us together.
The stats for the day:
225 ish swimmers
4 newbies
21.6 degrees and glorious!
I love swimming with the B&B. You are my high point every day.

I remember last year on the day after Anzac Day, we donned some rubber for warmth but today no need as the even the light offshore had a hint of summer still rippling through. The South Westerly that was promised ended up petering to a 5K whimper leaving the morning feeling like January rather than April. I could have sworn I saw a wink from the big guy this morning as he fired up the day.
With a Mid tide at 7 and a meter of ESE swell, we had an occasional gentle set on the point that augered well for the return leg. The light airbrushing from the WSW left a little ruffle but hardly worth mentioning however likely to stay with us till it swings northerly in the next few days though gathering a little momentum for the WNW. The swell at 9.5 sec period should also stay about the same for the rest of the week making the nights sleep for the boys in the Tardis a little uncomfortable. Wouldn't mind betting he scoots around North Head rather than being slapped by this swell and soon the wind all night.
The appearance of a few winter woolies I think was more psychological than temperature related.
The Oracle tells me 195 swimmers and 1 newbie. The 195 I can't confirm however I did meet the newbie whose name is Metta(hope I have it spelt right though phonetically correct at least). I saw her after the swim and she did indicate she would be back, so keep your eye out to say g'day.
As I mentioned the light wind really was hardly noticeable.
From the point the sky was something worth dwelling on with the light smattering as it cleared to a beautiful day.
The small swell at the point gave a distinct uphill feel.
As the swell lulled though it was evident the call to the point has somewhat been misinterpreted for the Fairy Bower point with the team spread to the horizon.
At this point, I took some more photo's but alas my camera decided it wasn't going to play so today I have to leave it here. I can though confirm we did all make it back in great spirits.
The powers that be confirmed the stats
195 swimmers
I confirmed 1 newbie
And I think 21.1 degrees was about right.
Have a great week people.
Brian.

100 years ago today 4000 men arrived at a beach, a long way from home. Many lives were lost on the beach that morning.
Today 580 BnB swimmers freely gathered to peacefully remember their sacrifice. For the next 364 days may we remember that our freedoms are as fragile as the young lives that were given for them 100 years ago, and not let a single one go to waste.
A big thank you to those who played, sang and orated at our pre-swim ANZAC ceremony. Thanks also to the lifeguards and BnB regulars who ensured a safe swim. Warm clear skies, a fairly friendly swell and a whole lot of newbie swimmers.

Yesterday we lost a music legend, Prince. He lived his life in such a manner that he was true to himself and shared his musicality with the world. I have seen an outpouring of love on social media and the news from people who have come into contact with him throughout his amazing life. Each person confirming what a beautiful person and friend he was. So this blog is dedicated to Prince. Some pics may symbolise ever so slightly some of his greatest hits. Enjoy!!
Prince Rogers Nelson
"Purple Rain"- Milly and I in our purple hoodies. A little chilly and a little rain out today.
"When Doves Cry" - fair enough they are seagulls
"Let's Go Crazy" - 7am crew heading into the water
"Raspberry Beret"- I know we wear fluro pink caps
"Little Red Corvette" Okay I know it is a golf but it is red and little
"Thunder" it is threatening thunder though
"The most beautiful girl in the world" (my blogging buddy and bff Zoe took this photo about an hour ago for me to post on today's blog after I begged her. It's the middle of the night in Majorca and I'm pretty sure I woke her up. FYI she came up with today's blog title).
Over the last 7 months or so I have absolutely loved coming down here to Manly to swim with all of you. I have met so many fun loving and inspirational people. I began writing the Blog in January with my swimming buddy Zoe who has recently just left to go on an extended holiday on the other side of the world. So for a few months I will be riding solo with these blogs.
The theme which we decided to go with since our first Blog was asking people "Why did you start swimming with the BnB?" "How does it make you feel?" So today I am continuing on with that theme.
I just want to say thank you to all the Bnb bloggers. I love reading your blogs daily. Now that I am part of this blogging family I completely understand the weight on my shoulders to produce something that all people can enjoy. Thank you for your dedication and service.
Introducing Simon (one of the awesome BnB bloggers) pictured with Lucy.
"I used to swim hugging the shore. One day just before Australia Day 2009 I saw a bunch of swimmers and I caught up with them and they said 'Why don't you join us?' It was Jules & Co. It is enjoyable, healthy competitive and adventurous".
Elizabeth (Another one of our dedicated BnB bloggers)
"I went in a Cole classic here. I was going through ocean swims. I saw a documentary called Buoys and Gals and found out about this place after getting into contact via email with Jules. I found it scary at first. I like swimming very much that is why I come here."
Introducing Tim (He wanted to screen all the pics I took of him, he gave this one the okay. Plus he wants everyone to know he is looking for a job. So if anyone has anything for him you will usually find Tim standing behind JK like a shadow. Btw I still cannot believe your age, you look amazeballs).
"I started swimming because I was challenged to do a triathlon. So I carried on with the swimming on a regular basis and I basically dropped every other sport. I have been swimming now for 3 and a half years. It makes me feel a lot better than when I wake up. Just refreshed and ready for the day."
Newbies Glen and Sharon from New Zealand. Welcome!
"A couple of years ago we came down to the beach we were just staying here in Manly. We saw everyone sitting here after the swim, unfortunately we missed it because it was our last day here. We saw the name on the clothing and when we went back to Auckland we googled you and we have been following the blog ever since. So we have come back this time specifically to swim."
Gino (back from Burma where has has been working who I am pretty sure I met 7 months ago on my first swim) and Amanda (newbie who has just started swimming with us this week. She is back home from working in Europe).
Gino "A lot cheaper than the pool. It's incredible seeing this wildlife in the middle of a huge city."
Amanda "It is such a nice way to start the day and you feel like you have accomplished something. I heard about the BnB from friends. It is such a nice community to belong to."
Beautiful family here Penny, Peter and their daughter Natalie. Natalie is moving to Singapore for work for a year. This is their last swim together for a little while.
The water today was pretty flat and the temperature is starting to drop below 22 degrees. It was still clear although it rained for the majority of the night, but there was a lot of seaweed as I entered the water. But the bonus was seeing a couple of dusky sharks, a few sting ray, a lone blue groper and hundreds of colourful fish as I headed back from Shelly Beach with Amanda.
There will be a short service commemorating ANZAC Day on Monday at 7am before we start our swim. Lest We Forget.
Before I leave you till I blog again next month this is something I read on Mindful.org
The top 5 regrest of the dying according to a palliative nurse:
I wish I had let myself be happier
I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends
I wish I had the courage to express my feelings
I wish I hadn't worked so hard
I wish I'd had he courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
Just something to think about. I hope you are living the best life for you.
Peace out till next month and much love,
Nat (riding solo)

This morning, all the super heroes, super for a range of reasons, dropped their capes and enjoyed their natural activity, ocean swimming. Here are Lilleen (All the way from South Africa - Margot, that is even further than the Blue Mountains!) Deanna and Julia. Lilleen has travelled so far to swim with her son - he is doing an early swim and kindly posed for a photo below at Shelly. Deanna is our own fantastic swimmer super hero and here is Julia. Not only doing her third swim and thinking, on approach, what will the water be like, bu also VOLUNTARILY teaches teenage girls!!! I tip my hat to you. She is addicted to ocean swimming now I am sure.
Super Steve
Super Sophie
Jerome showing a super stretch

I was trying to get to the beach by 6.30am to catch these super swimmers getting into the water but they started at 6am!! No chance of that so they kindly posed for a photo at the end of their swim. Super heroes of speed, stamina and excellent technique
Super heroes getting in even though there was a lot of sea weed. A LOT. What is in it? How can we know it does not have eels in it? How?
More super early swimmers training for this and that. Port Macquarie triathlon is one thing - 2km ocean swim, 90 km bike (the distance between Sydney and Wollongong just by the way) and 21 km run. That is probably the warm up
Luke and dad setting off
Super colours and super swimmers with great smiles
Diving in under the wave and I got a face full of weeds!
Who is this swimmer? did he plan to swim?
A super swimmer above the surface
Mermaid below:
Easter suburbs of Shelly beach where the super heroes relax like John and Ross
Father and son super heroes
Jenn and Ali
Ross and Bryan. Bryan has kept his super gloves for the swim
Alison and some flipper wearing swimmers
You think it is easy for super blog tarts. It is not. It is hard to get the pose just right especially when the photographer has timing a bit out. Here is Ian shortly before he was worn out from repeated jumps in the air. Who needs boot camp?
Lilleen and her son Dave ready to swim back
Here is a super thoughtful swimmer who was trying to return his cap. Not because he does not want to come back but because he has another one.
I noted again on my return to the beach that there was a lot less rubbish about after the BB swimmers had been through. We enjoy the swim and the water and each do a bit to keep it clean.
I love swimming despite being quite bad at it and more slow than seems physically possible. Also I am scared of waves. And stingers and sea weed. I know swimming is an individual activity but I think I get a huge benefit swimming amongst (ok, behind) all of these great super hero swimmers. Here are my two super girls Ruby and Miranda at beautiful Govett's Leap. If ever I think I know anything, I spend time with them.
This week I have been reading a book by Luria on a man with extraordinary memory, the Mnemonist and the second Marani book The Interpreter. Both short. Now I am getting through Karin Slaughter's latest crime fiction for some junk reading. I am looking forward to seeing the Sherpa movie if I can find a session.
Poppies. Rosemary.
ANZAC Day is Monday 25 April 2016. BB will mark the solemn occasion at 7 am before the swim.

So it appears that while the cat's away the mice will play, even at Bold and Beautiful Swim Squad. Sean, Ian and John we will all keenly be waiting to see how you can outdo Rainer and Jill with there perfectly executed "Let's Go" at Shelly Beach this morning.
Even on the newbe stakes the Jill did it again with 10 new swimmers joining us this morning for a perfect morning. Carol on the left below from California came down for a swim yesterday, found out about the squad and swan with us before heading back home to the States. She says she can't wait to get back.
This was the only bluebottle I saw today - Mike picked it up off the beach. Monica said she got hit by something but was alright.
The ever reliable John Bond was there to report that the temperature today was 22.2 - still just splendid and with all the fish life around at the moment it is a perfect time to get out of bed and come join us.
Mike took some great photos of our swimmers at North Steyne on the weekend and is regularly seen with his camera. What is he plotting with Henrietta and Ann.
The conditions today were just magnificent, very little swell, beautiful sunshine, warm water, the duskies, the yellowtail, the old wives and even the turtle seen near half way.
Here's some of the squad leaving this morning.
And then here we all are again at Shelly
Another getting ready for the "Lets Go" scoring a 10.0 - we hear the Rainer is keen to teach Sean exactly how to do a star jump off his shoulders!!!
And then it's back to Manly we go.
Oh yeah and here's a couple of some fish - practicing my underwater stills - Lainey Loo we need you back!!!
And here's the crew returning to Manly. You always have a fabulous day after starting it with these guys.
There's always a lineup to rinse in the outside shower.
Is anyone missing their badge covered jacket - Pirate found one on the ground late yesterday arvo so contact Alex if you would like it back.
Stats:
Temperature: 22.2 New swimmers: 10 Total swimmers (registered when published): 124
Staying safe
Remember that there are no badges for scaring yourself silly! While it is great to extend your boundaries, it is important to know your limits. Also, if you have a bit more experience, keep an eye out for new swimmers who might need company. Do read these excellent tips on staying safe in the surf. To read, or even download, click here.
