30/04/2012 - Dolphins, Turtles, Sharks and much more!

Over 66 Bold and Beautiful swimmers + 1 turtle!

Another lovely morning, bigger waves though but water still fairly warm at 20.9 degrees and air temp was 12.8!!

On the way back from Shelly we bumped into Marine Man, Michel Le Vieux and he said that swimming near/behind us as we left the point earlier were dolphins - but unfortunately we didn't see them! But a lot of swimmers saw a wonderful turtle on the way to Shelly! My guess is the dolphins will be back soon! Maybe tomorrow!!

The march in, Liz modelling a wonderful 'new' type of wetsuit - looks pretty good but how did she go in it? And apparently last pic has to go up on the blog of me in a wetsuit! Forgot my goggles and cap - so I went in at half way...so no at the point photos!

A short wait at the point before swimming back into the beach - A massive rogue wave got us just after this photo! Izzy arriving safely - about 1 minute later we both fell into a hole and the rip! You just never know what will show up in the ocean!

Bold and Beautiful extra news!

Here is picture of Michael Crawford in yesterday's South Curl Curl to Freshwater Oceanswim.  It was quite a dramatic swim as a southerly change rolled on over the course right after the start and forced the swimmers to work a bit harder to get out and around into Freshwater. All in a day's work for the seasoned BNB swimmers who took part.

Sean Parker followed the 2009 season of ocean swiming very closely with his camera in toe and as such has put together a great movie which whilst encompasing the whole season it also centres on four stories:

• Shelley Clark, eight time 25km open water champion attempting her ninth title despite shoulder injuries;
• Julie Isbill, a Manly resident, establishes a daily ocean swim that becomes very popular within her local community;
• Michael Christie, aged 67 and following heart surgery, attempts the Rottnest crossing and veers off course making it difficult to complete
• Paul Ellercamp a stalwart of the ocean swimming community faces the challenges of bureaucracy and a season beset with sharks!

The film features guest appearances from former Olympian Shane Gould, the Premier of Victoria Ted Baillieu, Cole Classic organiser Chris Cole, former Open Water Champion Shelley Taylor-Smith, former World Surfing Champion, Barton Lynch, Ocean swimming legend John Koorey, shark experts, Ron & Valerie Taylor, and colourful Northern NSW swimming celebrity, Mark "Killer" Edwards.

The one and only, very first Bold & Beautiful Bronze Squad is also featured !

The film takes us from iconic Sydney beaches, down to Portsea in Victoria, to the famous Rottness crossing in WA, ending the season at beautiful Byron Bay.

The premier screening is in support of cantoo, the charity that raises funds for cancer research whilst teaching new swimmers to prepare themselves for ocean swimming.

Over 133 Bold and Beautiful Swimmers

18 swimmers did a second lap and I am sure there was an early one with Gaetan coz I saw him at the end!

I should just copy and paste yesterday's blog because everything was almost the same - as far as conditions are concerned...but for each person I am sure every day is different!

A lovely lovely swim - the water was very clear and warmish about 21.5 but colder out of it - possibly about 14?  Anyway glad we were all up so early to make the most of the sun because it looks like a change is coming on as I write this! To those who slept in, look at what you missed!

A sand-storm under the sea coming back into the beach - and the rip is still there!

There was another lap to Shelly and back lead by John Bond - if you ever want to do 2 laps there is usually someone going - wait at the point on the way back from Shelly and you should see the others waiting to go.

Over 164 Bold and Beautiful Swimmers!

 

The water was beautiful and clear this morning - the clearest we (I) have seen it in a long while - glassy turquoise!  Great time to be in the water, which is warm - 21-ish.... in fact better to be in the water than out because it was a bit nippy today!

Although the sea looked calm it was deceiving, with quite a rip taking us out - Heidi James and I did an 'experiment' by not swimming once we got in and the rip took us out to the point, mind you all that mucking about meant we missed the LET'S GO! (Here's Michael's Safety in rips and surf)

Friendly words of advice - the quicker you get to Shelly - usually because you start the swim off much further away from the (meeting) point, the longer you have a long wait for us slowies / people who start from the point to arrive at Shelly, and the longer you wait the colder you get! 2nd photo Below is a picture of where the point is! ;-)

I couldn't get a good shot of some Old Wife fish that we saw so I found some other Old Wives floating along the surface! :-D

There were loads of sharks this morning. If you ever want to see more aquatic life especially the sharks follow Attracta and Jalna! Or just swim along the far left (as you leave Shelly) and just head along that way back towards the point - you won't be disappointed! 3rd pic isn't marine life but the magnificant Jalna!

I tried my best to get some clear shots of the wonderful sea life below (I can't seem to get to our resident aquatic photogapher Gaetan's level though!). Second pic is of an amazing blue groper that I saw at the point - well he was amazing and massive but he just looks like small dead blue blob in my photo - I bet he did that deliberately! Last photo though the gorgeous green grassy seaweed coming back into the beach (on the far left near the rocks) AND just look who was there! ;-)

27/04/2012 - Captain Feathersword

84 Boldelicious swimmers on this lovely Friday morning

...including Captain Feathersword here, aka our very own house salesperson Adam Moore. Nice touch unless it was a bit of a wardrobe malfunction, Adam :) See, this is proof of how bold we are, not letting little goggle details stop us from swimming or smiling.

 Of the 84 swimmers, four did an early swim to Queenscliff and back. They were kind enough to send me an early morning photo but the sun wasn't up yet then so those silhouettes could've been anyone. I prefer to show you these two pics above of Gaetan, Roberto, Richard A and Miles.

Last night, social media worldwide was a-buzz! Facebook, Twitter and I think YouTube even were going crazy with details of Fiona's jimble sting problems. Undeterred by those pesky little stingers (most of which had actually disappeared by this morning, luckily), Fiona donned a full-length rashie and a face that said Come On if ya dare! Midge and David look equally determined to enjoy the morning's swim.

 Our Dutch contingent Sabine made it to Shelly beach, unafraid of the marine life. As you can see in the photo evidence, the sharks in the bay are only the size of two bubbles in total.

Like a Florence Broadhurst wallpaper design is this lush, green seaweed in pic three above! Shame on whoever let the plastic bag enter the ocean right next to the seaweed, though. John K and I struggled to pull it out from the bottom of the sea as it was weighed down with mutilated body parts, stolen jewellery and bags of coke. Or so we thought. Turned out to be sand, imagine our surprise.

So nice to see Ian 'the walker' Miller join us in the ocean this morning.

 We had delicious cake coming out of our ears this morning, as we celebrated both Steven Coulter's and Vicki Harbutt's birthdays. Look how tasty that carrot cake was!

 Elaine had made sparkling raspberry muffins for Vicki, which unfortunately Vicki was forced to share with the rest of the gold lame sofa friends. Yum.

 This glamour couple arrived late for coffee. Together. Oh, it's only John and Attracta, not some famous footballer and his celebrity wife, which I thought at first glance.

Along the way I bumped into some of the gang around at half-way having a celebration for Nick! And baby Lilou was there! She just had her first swim with B &B! Look at those pink cheeks!

Last night's drinks at Manly Wine was another success! - below photo of Vicki Harbutt in her niece Annika's Captain aeroplane pilot hat! (at Manly Wine). Thanks again to Manly Wine for the terrific service and food and drink!! (and it was on them too!!)

The total count for yesterday's Anzac swim actually came out at 335, but it felt like over 400 people turned up, which is quite possible as I am sure many did not tick!

B&B swimmer Peta Saunders (below) just returned from teaching in Nepal for a month.  Michael Christie was winding her up something chronic about flying in and out of Luklah airport as its the most dangerous in the world so the photos were a promise/proof for Michael ...and she obviously made it out safely!!

25/04/2012 - Anzac Rememberance Swim

An incredible turn out today for the Anzac swim! This blog will be a slightly bigger one, spread out over a 4 parts...Arrival / Anzac Ceremony / The Return /The Jimbles and other matters!

Part 1 - Arrival

There was a great crowd of excited happy people this morning - and many newbies arrived all at once...See second photo of Ian making sure everyone was signed in!

The walk out went on for so long I am sure people were reaching Shelly as some were still leaving the beach! People were signing in and arriving way after 7 ... Chris - 7.04am! ;-)

Some of the great people we had along! ....good to see Tim and Linda venturing out into the freezing cold seas of 24 degrees - they don't usually come under 25! 2 cute paddle boarders who passed by me - just as I got my first hit of a Jimble! (see part 4)

Actually the water was colder than it has been around 19.5 - but conditions were ideal - especially for our new people.  The swim over was lovely and fairly clear and just how we like it. A lot of people took their time and enjoyed themselves which was good to see (because then I could at least not be very last!)

 

Part 2 - Anzac Rememberance Ceremony

Greg McDonagh arrived early looking dapper!  The guy who sells the corn on weekends dressed the part complete with Jeep! And the sign in sheets with the Rosemary that John Kelly kindly brought along for everyone to take on the swim.

Part 4 - Jimbles and other matters

Pretty much everyone seems to have been stung today and no it wasn't lice it was... jimbles! Those pesky jellyfish that arrive around about now!  One of the upsides of swimming in winter though is that you are so numb you don't usually feel the jimble stings!  They are nothing to worry about though - even though 2nd photo shows what a sting looks like - they do go away after a few months...I mean hours.  Their stings are a free Bold and Beautiful badge of honour too - so be proud of your markings!  Last photo is of a pair of fins found in the surf - normally 1 fin is lost but I have never seen a pair!  Hopefully the owner made it back safely??

A message from Anna A...B&B swimmer and Surf Club member...

It was wonderful to see so many people join in for today’s swim and the magnificent remembrance ceremony for the Anzacs at Shelly Beach. On these special occasion days we tend to get a huge crowd which is fantastic. Every morning, and particularly when we are numerous, let’s all try our best to share the front of the lifesaving club in a fair manner.

I had a friendly request this morning from one of the older members of Manly Lifesaving Club. Please let’s try to keep the wooden seats in front of the club free of bags and towels, and tie up dogs away from the seats and the entrance. It’s lovely to chat to the early rising club members as we get changed and ready for our swim, so please let’s leave the seats bag free. It’s only fair.

Back to relatively normal today....slightly calmer seas....

Everyone catching up on the latest at B&B especially after yesterdays excitement, John B deciding best way to tackle the new rip that has appeared...going all the way across the shore line, and even though a handful went around to half way, most opted to walk in from the beach.  The swim out was a little bumpy but nothing too scary!

The best thing that came out of yesterday was that now not only are we not scared of sharks, the sharks themselves have decided to swim with us! Bold and Beautiful is inclusive - we don't mind who joins us! Though the sharks were kinda showing off - they reached Shelly in under 10 seconds!

Below..The sand at Shelly beach - finally we can see it again! Waiting to head off - and the view at half way which has been a common sight of late for a few of us!

Back on dry land ...big smiles as always ... warming ourselves in the sun ...and some of the many who came back through the waves... The beach was closed again I am sure due to the rip!

At breakfast Izzy celebrating the sale of her apartment going through - ie, it's now hers!! Izzy very happy outside her very own place - with a special sign to all B&B'ers.... Nick TB, Nicole and Tim: "James (Goins) let us visit the Bridge of the Manly Ferry on our way to work today".  Good to see they remembered their pink hats! ;-D

23/04/2012 - Shark Bait!

Over 42 Bold and Beautiful Swimmers + 1 shark!

Some of the earlier swimmers returning....

Some personal bests were no doubt swum today due to the fact that there was an early spotting off the Point of a shark! Various reports were circulating..(great whites, tigers etc), but it appears to be confirmed by some our own swimmers (one of them Derek) who went in for an early swim and some of the Old and Bold!

Here's Derek with the full story - though Ian doesn't look too convinced and I notice Derek needs glasses?!? Apparently it was big, black and was eating fish... the shark ..not Derek!

I checked with the lifeguard and he said yes a shark alert went out earlier, I think around 6.30am.

Five brave souls went in from the beach - see below..Gulp!

The rest of us went in at halfway.

No photos were taken of the swim because I wasn't stopping!!  

But the brave souls made it!!! As did the rest of us ...YAYYY!

The Pap's were out to photograph us this morning...or was it the local photography school trying to take photos of the sunrise and we obscured their view!!  Either way we are a great sight to see first thing in the morning, especially so many of us. What a beautiful morning!!!

Speaking of Richard - someone took off with his B&B grey hoody this morning - which wouldn't be so bad IF HE DIDN'T HAVE HIS CAR KEYS IN THE POCKET!!  So could everyone please check and see if they have his? He will be sitting on the roof of his car at the surf club until someone returns them!

21/04/2012 - 2 rips for the price of one!

Not sure if anyone did any earlies or doubles!

Foggen hell what a swim! Yes foggy when we arrived but cleared up once swim got on its way.  The life guards put up the strong current sign which we all ignored....just kidding, no of course we didn't...because a lot of people went around to half way and the rest of us who feel more confident in surf etc. went in from the beach. The rip pulled us out fairly quickly and just as a lot of us got near to the point a freaking huge wave said HELLO!!  There were some very loud screams - mainly from me - but everyone was safe - because we have all read Michael's safety in the surf tips!  http://www.boldandbeautifulmanly.com.au/safety-in-the-surf.html

The swim over was fairly smooth, just before Shelly though it got a bit bumpy!

Swimmer John O'Neill was seen having a sleep on the boat ramp - swimming from half way seemed to have taken it out of him - although he assures me he was doing sit ups?! Will try and get photographic evidence tomorrow...

Welcome back to Nick- who is normally one of our regular swimmers but has not been swimming for 8 weeks due to a broken pinky toe... or was it rib?? - he said if he makes it ok today he will be entering an Iron Man comp... not sure he made it back though? Did anyone see him? ;-)

Below - Back at base camp - A welcome shower for the lovely Paige! Ian convincing new comer Tiny Nick to come back...no, no Nick absolutely loved it,  and he and friends joined us for breakfast at Manly Wine..they definitely had that 'we made' it smile on their faces! Please come back! :-)
